Ok, I’ve read much discussion about this and now that I finally know exactly what this is about I can form an opinion on it.

From my point of view, Handofg0d did well. Nothing was wrong in his behaviour. I would say I’d have done it differently, but if it would be better, that’s debatable. Point is that this was a MAJOR security hole, one that needed to be patched up IMMEDIATELY. Bug reports, mails, all that jazz, it would all easily be lost in the ****storm of other stuff that rolls in every day. Sure, it would have been found and treated, no doubt, but when? That was the question. This was the only way to get immediate attention and an immediate fix.

Seeing how everyone keeps making comparisons to real world stuff, I’d say this incident is similar to someone leaving a note in a vault filled with gold that they had a huge gaping bubble-shaped hole in their east wall, even being kind enough to leave his name and address, only to find a party van ramming into his house to arrest and molest him as thanks.

Quite frankly, this was a ****-up on the mods’ side. No, I don’t think tubs should be demoted or banned. It was a mistake. People make them. But h0g should not be banned. Not permanently, not temporarily. He should be thanked for finding such a gigantic security hole. Unban him, give him a unique ‘M/God for a day’ peen, thank him, have a cup of tea, rejoice, profit.

Here’s where I disagree. Unless the email account was intentionally set up as a public use account for anyone to access, then HoG was ‘pretending’ to be Tubs in order to access the email account.

Mailinator was intentionally set-up to provide public-use accounts that anyone can access. Go to mailinator, type in the account name, and you can view all the mail that account has received in the past 60 minutes.

Strike #2 was when HoG decide to ‘go for the lulz’ instead of simply reporting the security hole he found to ET & CZ.

Yet going for the lulz resulted in ET and CZ finding out about the problem, and didn’t cause them any more grief than if he HAD just TMed ET. There’s precedent set for that being acceptable; the Haxploitation ePeen has been granted to people who ****ed **** up for the lulz, and HoG himself was granted a unique ePeen for ruining the hell out of IDC

Now, more importantly, I’m curious if Tubs is demodded and banned. After such a boneheaded screwup on his part, the smart thing to do is to take away his abilities and his access until you’ve got things sorted out and figured out if he’s going to be a security risk (And also checked to make sure that he’s not doing anything else that’s blindingly stupid, like setting his pbumword to “111111” or saving his pbumword on a public computer.)

I guess I bumumed they’d had a way to check that. If it wasn’t him, then, this is kind of what I was talking about before. If you get a rep for being disruptive, then you get rounded up as a Usual Suspect. If HoG had simply Tubmailed the security leak the first time without posting in Tubs account, I’m pretty sure that they wouldn’t have bumumed it was him this time.
