Edit: Well that bleedin figures. I go post my opinion and it’s already moot. F you, universe. You too, karma. And probably myself, too, since I’m probably to blame for it, too.
So yes, rejoice and all that. Call me if anyone brings cake to the party. I’ll gladly put on a skimpy outfit and hide inside it.

No, not quite. If you’d added in a part where the guy that left the note borrowed some of the gold, bought the Statue of Liberty, trimmed it with Christmas lights, but kept the receipt, got his money back and put the gold back in the vault, and then left the note, that would be a fair comparison.
The part about the party van was pretty funny, though. Acid Flux edited this message on 02/01/2009 1:32AM |

Mailinator was intentionally set-up to provide public-use accounts that anyone can access. Go to mailinator, type in the account name, and you can view all the mail that account has received in the past 60 minutes.

Yet going for the lulz resulted in ET and CZ finding out about the problem, and didn’t cause them any more grief than if he HAD just TMed ET. There’s precedent set for that being acceptable; the Haxploitation ePeen has been granted to people who ****ed **** up for the lulz, and HoG himself was granted a unique ePeen for ruining the hell out of IDC
Now, more importantly, I’m curious if Tubs is demodded and banned. After such a boneheaded screwup on his part, the smart thing to do is to take away his abilities and his access until you’ve got things sorted out and figured out if he’s going to be a security risk (And also checked to make sure that he’s not doing anything else that’s blindingly stupid, like setting his pbumword to “111111” or saving his pbumword on a public computer.)
Edit: Balls. My browser was caching pages, so I didn’t see it was resolved. Go me! SimplyTHEBEST edited this message on 02/01/2009 11:29AM |

Yet going for the lulz resulted in ET and CZ finding out about the problem, and didn’t cause them any more grief than if he HAD just TMed ET. Point of difference: Privately communicating a security hole to ET&CZ creates zero additional risk. Publicly communicating a security hole had the potential to add significant additional risk through copycats.
Because it didn’t actually result in additional risk, I can fully support a temp-ban (which is what has now happened). If it had gone further, either through what HoG or what others did in his footsteps, following into the hole he publicly exposed, then a more severe punishment would have been appropriate.
And of course, now knowing that this email service is intentionally so transparent, I fully agree that Tubs was very irresponsible in continuing to use it after he became a moderator.
All in all, I’m relieved it’s panned out the way it has. If at the end of the day you’ve learned something new (and no one got hurt in the process), then it’s not a bad day. |

Yo be honest why did everyone bumume it was h0g? Is that the new scapegoat now? If some random person posts something unusual, is it automatically not them? |

I guess I bumumed they’d had a way to check that. If it wasn’t him, then, this is kind of what I was talking about before. If you get a rep for being disruptive, then you get rounded up as a Usual Suspect. If HoG had simply Tubmailed the security leak the first time without posting in Tubs account, I’m pretty sure that they wouldn’t have bumumed it was him this time. |

It’s obviously the real ET talking about policy now, and he has yet to deny those posts were really him, so yes, I think it really was our beloved site creator trying to win some quick cool points when player-mod relations are sinking. Turning around and re-permabanning handofg0d for it was someone’s bad joke. |
