I’m shocked, shocked to find that exploitation and fraud is going on in here!
“Your illegal flezz to buy that Custom E-Peen, sir.”
Oh, thank you very much.

Because, to reverse the logic, no one would have sold a pink floyd if the auction was limited to 303,000 .
A limited bid price just makes all the rare moar files not worth selling. What would you limit the price to? 1000x (303,000 for pink floyd, pre-adjustment). All that would mean is people would have been swapping Versnatche for 500,000,000 (or whatever moderately expensive store item), and not selling floyds. Alternately, everything rare can be ridiculously expensive, and not worth using because of repair costs.
Limited bid prices means not selling rare items, and having an auction site full of things you can buy or find easily. While that might be great for newbies and people who haven’t bought Episode 2, it’d be pretty boring for everyone else. Taking advantage of differences in Frugality is cute and all, but not the most interesting part of an auction site.
If there was some sort of ‘easy solution’ to auction fixing, I’m sure Ebay would love to hear about it, ‘cause they certainly haven’t figured it out yet.

No, I won’t do my own browser game. I feel that there are too many of them at the moment (many of them being bad) and I predict the big browser-game companies here in Germany (like Bigpoint) to get into trouble in a few years. Log in to see images!
Seriously: No need to play dumb with me, Mr. Trout. You had to be aware of the fact that it would influence the outcome of auctions if they wouldn’t be anonymous. At the latest when you implemented the display of the seller, you had to ask yourself in which direction to go. Obviously you decided to make them non-anonymous and there has to be a reasoning behind it. That’s all I want to know about. You won’t make me believe that you were like “Oh wow, there are people using Kyoubai for flezz transactions… now that’s totally unexpected! Log in to see images!”

Okay, so there could be bid limits on most cheap items and no bid limits on expensive items. (Pink Floyd, Earbleeders, ****.MILF, etc.)

When you think about is, is there any legitimate reason to auction **** like Happidex besides artificially pumping up your Total Auctions Sold and to launder flezz? Maybe just disallow certain things to be auctioned off. |

How would anonymity have helped at all with a very clearly defined scheme like this? It’s easy to isolate a set of items that no one else is selling and use them to launder money right now. Yes, if it was anonymous, a clever individual might spot it and interrupt, stealing some of the flezz for themselves, but for the most part, an organized group could easily manage the same feat even without being able to see who is putting what auction up.
“Guys, okay we’re going to put 10 happydexes up starting at 10 pm EST through 10:05 est on 12 hour auctions.”
Man, the anonymity would’ve made that manuver so much harder to do… |

How about bid limits on purchasable items and easy-to-get .moar files, and no limits on unpurchasable and hard-to-get .moar files? |

Actually, the auction house seems to be reflecting an interesting thing right now. Near zero demand for anything that isn’t a top item or a joke item. The joke items are artificial demand created by the system. Folks can toss that stuff into the auction house, but aside from those doing it to launder or as part of a shared joke, they aren’t managing to really sell them. In effect, long term, the fact that putting these items on will produce a loss for the auctioner will see them not show up.
I went through on an alt and tossed bids out on some twenty items this morning which were going for less than they sell for in the Ppwn shop. I mean, why not. |

This was already adressed in previous threads aswell. You could prevent this from happening by not opening auctions immediately, but only at certain times (for example once every three hours). Of course, this would affect the outcome of all auctions because they’d end at the same time, but that doesn’t sound too bad for me. Another solution to avoid this would be that they open at random (e.g. at a random time between 1h and 3h after the auction was set up).
Just to make this clear: I’m aware that this suggestion would require a lot of effort and couldn’t be implemented short-term. The point is: It was obvious that flezz transactions were going to happen the way Kyoubai was implemented.
//For clarification: Of course, the seller wouldn’t know which auction is his aswell. He would never get any link. FalCoN edited this message on 01/19/2009 12:38PM |

There are thousands of items in this game. Hundreds that aren’t for sale with any frequency due to low worth. Even that system combined wouldn’t make a big difference. In fact, all it would do would be to obscure folks doing it so people wouldn’t be able to even try to interrupt it.
“What’s not on the market at all right now? +2 frugality moar file? Okay, folks grind it for a bit and lets go toss up 10 of them. They’ll show up between 1 and 3 hours from now. Bid on them.”
It’d be only luck if someone else managed to put up the same previously not worthwhile item at the same time as them. |

Please see my bug report from scully_bot where BidSquid took total bid, but only delivered the high bid to the seller. The bug is still there, or was a day ago. (Although maybe that is because it is to be reversed.)
Also, there is no point in anonymous auctions since url’s for each auction are unique. Everything that has been done could be done very simply by saying “Here’s the link.”
As mentioned in the let’s retire the flezz leader board thread – there was a solidly closed economy before the auction house. We now have an open situation. Frankly, I recommend simply making flezz transfer a legal thing. Policing this crap is going to horribly time consuming and wickedly pointless, since it can be done on a much smaller scale over time and no one is going to scream foul play. |
