The rehabilitation thing looks like it would work IF there was a way to guarantee that the criminal has no desire left to commit crimes.
Forgive me for the obscure childish reference, but When Man-Ray was released accidentally by SS and PS, he returned to his evil ways. However, using MM and BB’s Tickle-Belt, SS and PS were able to defeat Man-Ray. Even after Man-Ray faked goodness to escape the clutches of the Tickle-Belt, its effect lingered whenever he tried to be evil. Thus, Man-Ray’s desire to do evil was completely suppressed. If this was possible in reality, then it WOULD be more effective than simple death. |

If people are getting owned and convicted without actually being guilty, then the legal system is more ****ed up than i am.
Fix the legal system and problem is solved.
Also, let everyone have a chance at this rehabilitation process. Those that change and become good people are released after the intense therapy. Those that remain evil are sentenced. This way, all people get two shots at being good. This way, anyone that messes up once gets a second try at reform.
Since all people are getting two chances, more time is given for the actual investigations to take place. This means that more evidence can be collected and analyzed. This means that innocent people will get justice much more often. True criminals have a greater chance of being stopped from committing further crimes. |

In this way, the death penalty remains effective for the worst criminals, the ones that truly refuse to change. The ones that can change will be spared since they will be reformed after the intense therapy.
This treatment can be universally applied. A teenager that kills can be corrected and become a good person later on in life. The same applies for a smaller child, or an adult. This process allows everyone multiple chances at being a good person.
This process is potentially more effective than always using the death penalty. If implemented, it could reduce the number of people that are “wrongfully convicted”. |

newsflash – humans are fallible
one of the reasons the legal system is ****ed up is because many states still use the death penalty
getting rid of the death penalty is a part of fixing the legal system. BirdofPrey edited this message on 12/07/2008 7:53PM |

in my new suggested model, the death penalty is only employed when the people WON’T change through the intense therapy
according to what earlier people said, the therapy is extremely potent. That means that the innocent people will be released, since they never committed the crime. The people that are not extremely bad will be changed, and can resume a normal life. Only the truly evil criminals that cannot be changed will be persecuted.
This way, the death penalty is only used in extreme cases, instead of being used for all serious crimes. ghax edited this message on 12/07/2008 8:02PM |

that’s significantly more reasonable than my original suggestion, is it not? also, this one actually makes sense
if someone refuses to change their ways, then they are a serious threat if someone can be converted into a good person, then they should be allowed to do so this system gives everyone 2 chances to be good, allowing everyone a chance to reform
if the intense therapy fails to work, then the criminal never had hope of becoming good again if it does work, then a person has just been saved, converted, and let back into society as a good person
imo this system is more humane than just using the death penalty / life imprisonment
according to earlier posts, it can be much cheaper as well allowing the criminals and the taxpayers to get the best of both worlds |
