personal information bans: birthday threads

so being a long-term member of the site excludes people from personal information bans for birthday threads right? mods can bumume bday threads for oldfabulous persons are OK because they are grandfathered in by previous bday threads from before the personal info rules were in place?
i think most people havent explicitly posted their birthdays on this site yet bday threads always show up and are places of jubilation |

Saying “happy birthday” is ambiguous since someone can be early or late. Saying “today is joe schmoe’s birthday” is semi sorta borderline, but I don’t think that’s the intent of the rule, either. Saying “joe schmoe’s date of birth is 3/23/1912” is out of line and will get a ban.
That said, isn’t there a “birthday” thread somewhere that a ton of people put their birthdays in there? I’m not searching “birthday” in flamebate search to find it, though… |

Also everyone who owns the male reproductive organ Hyman E-Peen should be permabanned, since I don’t believe ET published his birthday info anywhere in FW before, and I’m way too lazy to look up for that.

The whole deal with personal information troubles is that certain people may be able to cause damage to, or (more likely) interfere with the real lives of those who had their dox leaked.
Things that are harmful (time to state the obvious!) Real name. On its own, all it really does is destroy anonymity, causes general discomfort for the victim…once combined with something else it can be much more dangerous. Some of these things include… pix Now they know what you look like. address Now they know where you live. phone number Now they can prank call you! or order like 100 pizzas. Family members Oh ****. They’ve got your wife and kids now, and possibly your dog or cat or bunny rabbit. Occupationreally varies on the job, but something that shouldn’t go revealed either way.
I think that covers all the bases of the big no-nos in personal info. Revealing a birthday, if it is just the birthday, is pretty much harmless. The worst they can really do is make a birthday thread with goatse inside or something. Unless of course they already have other info and can use birthdays for verification…but at that point you’re pretty much ****ed in every orifice anyway. So what is the harm in just revealing a birthday? |
