My recommendation for the Prisoner’s dilemma is to tell the other guy you will choose foe and then share with him the spoils. Then they either spite or trust you. Of course I’m a nice guy who would share the spoils so who knows about you guys. |

Prisoner’s Dilemna is always kinda interesting (to me at least) in the way that even allowing the prisoner’s to confer won’t solve the problem if they give their answers separately – they still can’t trust that the other will do what he said he would, and in either scenario betrayal gives them the better outcome. (Asking ghax what he did only helps if he’s honest, and it’s entirely in his interests to lie)
Might be able to break out of the box if you added some weighting of the chances that the other player will choose to co-operate with you – if they’re someone you trust or you’ve had the time to plan things out with them then they’d be more likely to co-operate, but even then the fact remains that they’ve got nothing to lose by stabbing you in the back.
I think the way these get solved in reality is the additional benefits/penalties not in the original setup. Benefits like earning a reputation of trustworthiness or gaining the other “prisoner”s trust, penalties like a later revenge by the other player or guilt from screwing them over. Take those into account and you might be able to get a “co-operate” column that’s worth choosing. |

This is why I’d say an honest “I choose villain” path with the promise of sharing afterwards. As long as you go in only hoping for half the prize and realizing that you still end up ahead that way, everyone is happy in the end. Of course there is a reason that communism never works out Log in to see images! |

Even then, from the other player’s perspective, unless they have reason to trust you at your word that you’ll share, will have no incentive not to screw you over. In this variant there’s equally no incentive in favour of betrayal if you think your opponent will betray you, whereas in the original stating of the problem you still would have an incentive to choose betrayal – reducing your own penalty.
Basically the game’s not quite a full Prisoner’s Dilemma because betrayal only weakly dominates co-operation (you get an equal nothing no matter what you do if the other player betrays you, as opposed to getting royally screwed if you co-operate and they betray as against a minor penalty if both players betray each other)
Now I need to not use the word betray for a while, because it’s starting to sound like a nonsensical gibberish word. Much like elbow or spoon if you say them enough times.

I think you should select someone else. I highly doubt you will ever receive mail from Tesfan. |

Well, I dunno. It feels like I’m toxxing myself if I don’t do what I originally said I was going to do in this contest, but I agree that getting a mail from Tesfan is unlikely at this point, so I’ll choose someone else.
Post below if you want to be the new participant. After five new posts I will randomly select one poster who will compete with ghax for the BP. |
