Tesfan was on flamebait yesterday it’s not like he’s gone, just thought I’d point that out.
IDK why he wouldn’t take a shot at this if he got chosen and all he had to do was tubmail one word. It doesn’t make sense. It’s like, if you had one shot, or one opportunity to seize everything you ever wanted — one moment. Would you capture it or just let it slip? |

99% chance at least one chooses foe. 80% they both do.

This “game” never made sense to me.
If he chooses foe, I will get nothing, no matter what I choose. If he chooses friend, I could either get a small prize for choosing “friend”, or a large prize for choosing “foe”.
Since the only thing I have any control over is the size of my prize, I might as well go for the largest prize, and choose “foe”.
And the same holds true for my opponent. So why bother playing? It’s like tic-tac-toe. Pointless. |

that’s why this is psychologically interesting. Both people profit if they can trust each other, but psychologically, the smaller guaranteed prize doesn’t make the larger risk guaranteed prize worth it. |

It gets interesting when the game is repeated several times. (Iterated prisoners dilemma; Axelrods The Evolution of Cooperation is really worth reading.) |

Decision trees: Probability of outcome * positive or – desirability = ‘net’ decision value In this case the probability of failure if ‘friend’ is selected is so high foe is the only good option. |

It depends – you know who you are playing against here so if you like the other person you might chose ‘friend’ if you want him to win and don’t mind getting nothing. It probably doesn’t look good for Ghax… |

Change the parameters so that Nillo plays against person X, and if they both pick foe then ghax gets the BP. Catt although edited this message on 08/17/2009 2:42PM |

If both participants agreed it would be okay. Definitely give ghax a better shot at winning. |

I´d just choose friend. So what. If he chooses friend I get a reward, if he chooses foe then he´ll get the price, but will have to live with haven taken advantage of me. If both take foe they´ll be happy that at least the other one didn´t get anything and nothing is learned. If one chooses friend and the other one foe, he either lerns to trust and some later time I might and up with a reward or at least earn some respect for my decision. If It´s someone ho is just to greedy that´s his problem and he´ll learn soon enough or never, at least I can be at peace.
Havving earned trust helps you more long term then having a quick fix of whatever. As people realize someone is not trustworty he might end up loosing far more on the long run.
If you want to restart your little experiment count me in, my desicion won´t change anyway :-) |
