Some people have mixed feelings about it, but I really liked 1602 by Neil Gaiman.

I really like it, but I don’t think there is anything from Gaiman I haven’t liked.

I’m gonna be painfully obvious here and point out The Sandman by Neil Gaiman too, since it’s not been mentioned yet. Anything by Alan Moore’s usually excellent as well so I’ll mention V for Vendetta n’all. I’m currently enjoying Robert Kirkman’s stuff at the moment, The Walking Dead and Invincible don’t bring anything particularly new to their genre’s (zombies and superheroes, respectively) but are extremely entertaining nonetheless.

Errr… Sin City by Frank Miller, 30 Days of Night by Steve Niles and Ghost in the Shell by Shirow Masamune are all very good too. Can you tell my that my tastes are strictly mainstream? Just about anything else I like has already been mentioned.

I’ve also been told that DMZ by Brian Wood, The Invisibles by Grant Morrison and just about anything by Warren Ellis is worth reading, but I’ve not got round to them meself.

Close enough. That’s probably a significant understatement from me though, cos Ellis is supposed to be fantastic.

I love Transmet, as long as it is in small doses. To much of it causes overload.

Fell is actually a better Ellis book than Transmet, IMO.

I’m also really enjoying Ex Machina by B.K. Vaughan right now, I found it after Y: The Last Man ended.

There’s nothing wrong with mainstream, only snobs would say otherwise. I’ve found a mainstream book is usually so popular, because it’s good.

If you think about it, Sin City, Walking Dead, and Invincibles started out very indy, and only became popular and mainstream because of how good they are.

“Venereal Biohazard”

Transmetropolitan is by far my favorite of all intense graphic novels, but on my downtime I prefer quirky, light reading. My absolute favorite comic series is Scott Pilgrim.

“The Lady is a Tramp”

“Transmetropolitan” & “Global Frequency” by Warren Ellis

“Sandman” by Neil Gaiman

“Runaways” (a bit goofy, but it’s got it’s charm)

“Atomic Robo” by Brian Clevenger

“The Spirit” (both clbumic and current)

“Johnny the Homicidal Maniac” by Jhonen Vasquez

“Astro City” by Kurt Busiek

“Maus” by Spiegelman

and, of course, the greatest graphic novel of all time is “Watchmen”.

Better Living Through Chemicals

“Cerebus” by Dave Sim, with later background art by Gerhard

Maybe he got a little bit preachy (and possibly crazy) by the end, but he stuck to his word and stayed indie for his whole career, and I can’t think of anyone who’s managed to succeed doing that. The Mother’s & Daughters storyline is some of the best philosophy I’ve ever read. It totally changed my outlook.

If you’ve never heard of it, here’s some Wiki: (full of story spoilers)

Interesting guy, at any rate.

He keeps everything in print, in affordable phone-book sized editions, available at better comic shops and from various websites.
