Are you burned? Do I want to know how?

To answer your question, no, I just want to send him a message.

Cerbera odollam, commonly known as the Suicide tree, is a species of tree native to India and other parts of Southern Asia. It grows preferentially in coastal salt swamps and in marshy areas. It grows wild along the coast in many parts of Kerala, India and has been grown as a hedge between home compounds. It’s a potent killer, often used for both suicide and murder.

The kernels of C. odollam contain cerberin, a potent alkaloid toxin related to digoxin, a poison found in foxglove. The poison blocks the calcium ion channels in heart muscle, causing disruption of the heart beat. This is most often fatal. Cerberin is difficult to detect in autopsies and its taste can be masked with strong spices. Therefore it is a common method in both homicide and suicide in India. According to a study made in 2004, 537 deaths can be attributed to cerberin poisonings in the 11 years between 1989 and 1999 just in the state of Kerala.

Janie… WHAT THE ****? I found this page missing in one of my books yesterday evening. Wh- why would you do something like that? Are you… is this some kind of… threat? ****. I apologize if I have… angered you somehow. I know I was abrupt with you the other day, and I’m… sorry. It’s just… well, I was trying to get some work done, and then you and Noturnal showed up and were fighting about some goddamn boots, and then that Ash kid… God, try seeing things from my point of view, ok?

Anywahs… whatever… I’m sorry if I offended you. Perhaps, um… if you’re interested, I can show you some things in my garden. I don’t have any c. odollam, because I haven’t been able to recreate the tropical salt marsh environs it prefers. But I have some hemlock and nightshade… Of course, you have to promise not to… touch anything, ok? And… please bring back that page from my book. My books are… very precious to me.

Pbumiflora is a genus of flowering plants commonly known as pbumion flower. Pictured above is Impératrice Eugénie, an ornamental variety of [i]p. edulis, a species of pbumionflower grown primarily for its fruit, i.e. pbumion fruit.

The leaves and roots of various pbumiflora species, primarily p. incarnata and p. edulis have a long history of entheogenic use by the indigenous peoples of the Americas. The leaves are used to make an infusion that is used to treat insomnia, hysteria, and epilepsy, and is also valued for its painkilling properties.

The leaves and roots of some species of pbumiflora have been found to contain significant quantities of beta-carboline harmala alkaloids which are MAOIs with anti-depressant properties and have been used to enhance the effects of mind-altering drugs. Once dried, the leaves can also be smoked.

****… another page from my ****ing books? Damn, what the **** is wrong with you? Man… ****… you know, I thought you… I was kind of thinking you’d make a good research bumistant of something… you know, if you needed a summer job… it’s always a good way to get your parents off your case… but, what the ****? I can’t have you around if you’re going to mess with my **** like this.

I can even make you some pbumionflower tea. I have some of that in my garden! It’ll… help calm you. God. ****. I’m so sorry.

Amaranthus retroflexus is a species of flowering plant. It goes by common names such as Red-root Amaranth, Redroot Pigweed, Common Amaranth.

Amaranth may be seen by many as a weed, however, in the organic garden it is useful as a soil aerator. The leaves can be eaten and are said to taste like spinach. It has toxic properties concerning domestic animals, such cattle and porcine.

Yeah… um… this is not the amaranth I have chosen as my namesake.

[m]Amaranthus caudatus[/m], commonly known as “love-lies-bleeding” is commonly used in North America as an ornamental. Many parts of the plants, including the leaves and seeds, are edible, and are frequently used as a source of food in India and South America — where it is the most important Andean species of Amaranthus, known as Kiwicha. The red color of the inflorescences is due to a high content of betacyanins, which are important dye pigments.

I chose this plant as my namesake because “love-lies-bleeding” was my nickname in my first year of college when I was part of the drama cl—- Oh, for ****’s sake, why am I telling you this?

But why- why have you… defaced my property like this? I have never done anything to you.

Holy ****. I can’t believe an organization full of.. uh, people (so to speak) so ****ing… paranoid as they are would overlook something like this. ****. ****, and they’re all blaming me, like I let you guys in or something.

Uh…thanks. I’m gonna show this to them. Hopefully they’ll get on it soon.

Hye nach volget das Puch der Naturby Konrad von Megenberg, printed in Augsburg in 1475. The scholar and cleric Konrad von Megenberg compiled his encyclopedic Book of Nature in the fourteenth century from a number of earlier authorities. The fifth chapter discusses plants – 89 species arranged in no particular order. The woodcuts are the first printed depictions of plants presented for botanical rather than decorative purposes. Only a handful of copies are believed to be extant.

Oh my God, Janie. This is… beautiful. How did you… I mean, thanks. Wow. Um… I don’t know what to… why… ****, this is the nicest thing anyone’s ever given me.

I wish- I wish I understood what you’re trying to tell me, Janie. I’m just… I’m not very good at games. Sorry. But if you want to talk sometime, well, I’m sure we could arrange a meeting. I would love to bring you some pbumion flower and hyssop tea, for your nerves. And to thank you in person for this.

Are you implying that my nerves need calming? That I’m hysterical or something?

You should get your nose out of plants for five minutes and talk to a real person once in a while. You’re welcome to come to my house, though. It would be good if my dad saw that I have friends who don’t dress like they’re on their way to a wacky funeral.

No, just that you seem… upset. Maybe you’re… I don’t know… having a bad day or something? Please don’t take offense; I often use hyssop and pbumionflower tea tohelp me… relax and focus on my work.

Sigh… what are you implying about me now? That I’m antisocial or something? I spend plenty of time talking to… well… people in the organization, for instance.

And by the way, my research is very important. I thought you understood that.

Yeah… um… why don’t we, uh, go to a bookstore or, um, cafe or something. I’m not… all that comfortable with parents right now.

I, uh, need a cup of tea. Maybe… we can talk later?

As far as being antisocial, people in your creepy “organization” don’t count. Hell, I’m not sure any of the ones I’ve met are even human.

You sound like you’ve had some issues with your parents. I’m a good listener. Really, I am. I know it’s hard to believe ‘cause I talk a lot, but it’s true. You’ve got my contact info if you ever do want to talk. It really would do you good to get away from those plants.

Our house has this old greenhouse that’s all overgrown and nobody does anything with it and it’s full of weeds. Maybe you could tell me some stuff to plant. Oh, and I did see a Suicide Tree once. I went on a business trip with my dad to India. It was supposed to be “educational”. Sometime I’ll tell you about Indian jails, tho.
