Just re-read it a couple of days ago. Awesome story… one of the short stories that really got me into reading modern literature. (view post) |

New Domination Card Suggestionsmarkchd Posted:
I think you’re right about the limitation towards the end of the round, but not for the reason you’re thinking of. I think the limit should exist to give the new winner a chance to react.
How is the last minute Lottery winnings any different from having one person letting loose a bunch of bumhole cards in the last couple of minutes? Why would the bumhole card exist otherwise? It has its name for a reason. It also has strict limitations. You can’t use it if you’re in second place without totally giving up any chance you had. You use it when you’re not even in the running, to go out in a blaze of glory. It’s a card to inspire people to stone one person to death…
The Lottery would be no different in inspiring resentment if it was done at the last moment, except for instead of trying to bring down the leader, it’s designed to bring one person up.
Any limit on playing it towards the end of the round would be there to give people time to react to the new balance of power, so maybe it isn’t a bad idea. Maybe no Lottery cards played in the last 4 hours of play?
Another limitation would be that a lottery card only takes scoops away from people with 4 or more in play. No sense in taking the last scoop from some poor schmuck. However, I think it should still reward the scoops randomly, even if the winning player doesn’t have any scoops taken away. (view post) |

New Domination Card SuggestionsHow about a “The Lottery” card? Every player is stripped of one or two random scoops. One player, selected at random, will receive all of the scoops removed from the other players. The scoops could either be in their original flavas, giving the lottery winner a big boost in the Minimum Scoops contest, or all scoops concentrated into one random flava, giving a boost to the Fave Flava contest. Maybe randomly one or the other, even.
It would be a lot of chaos, and just might change the balance of power on a Domination Team. One or two scoops missing won’t hurt any one player much, and the big boost to one person would mean everyone has to change their strategies midstream. All of the sudden, it’s no longer three or four players in competition for the trophies, and everyone else hoping for an bumhole card to get their last licks in before they throw in the towel. Now, the competition has changed, and everyone has an opportunity to win if luck favors them.
I get tired of seeing one player who’s exploiting a flava. That means you, Antifreeze, though I’ve seen someone with 100 Chocolates… I’m still scratching my head over that one. “The Lottery” would give the little guys a chance. That way, the dozen or two players who don’t have a chance with a dozen scoops against someone with 200 just in one flava can even the odds without shafting themselves and everyone else with an bumhole card. I think the bumhole card isn’t the only way you can implement a ‘If I can’t win, I can screw up the balance of power’ strategy.
It’s a win-win situation. Everyone has a chance to profit, though the little guys have more reason to play this card than the pack leaders.
It might be wise to place a limit as to the number of Lottery cards that can be played during a round. Maybe a random number like three to six Lottery cards per round can be purchased? After the quota is reached, the Lottery card is removed from the list of cards available. The random number keeps players on their toes, not knowing if the last Lottery card has been played. Too many Lottery cards might discourage people to maintain a strategy, knowing that it all could be screwed up by random luck, but just a few could shake things up and keep it interesting for everyone, not just the pack leaders. It might breathe life into what’s become a dull, predictable contest between who has the most money and who has the most Klan support. (view post) |

How we plan to improve ForumBuildr!I don’t know if Klan-based organized voting is still a problem, but while randomly browsing profiles, I discovered a member of a prominent Klan who had ‘Vote for XXXXXXXX Forum’ in their profile. The forum appeared to be doing quite well. This person had a long list of friends who probably check their profile from time to time to compare trophies and e-Peen.
Perhaps this is why certain forums seem to succeed and others fail. I suppose it’s next to impossible to monitor secret ways in which Klans communicate which forums they want everyone to vote for, but this apparently is one of them that’s directly related to the ForumWarz site.
Maybe a search on each user’s profile for a submitted forum would turn up more campaigning like this? (view post) |

The officialized forumbuildr 2.0 beta WORD TYPE suggestion thread!Is there a word type that will return the player’s name when it displays in the threads? I checked the word type list in the Wiki, but couldn’t find it. @player_name would be an appropriate name. A player name word type would make constructing angry replies a lot more realistic and personalized. There is already a @nick that returns a random nickname, why not one for the player?
Also, some other suggestions to make things more personal:
@player_friend – returns a random friend from the user’s friend list. You would have to remove male reproductive organshot boy Fr4gGingR1teZ of course.
@player_klan – returns the player’s Klan name.
@klan – returns a random Klan name
@klan_member – returns the name of a random name from the player’s klan.
@player_clbum – returns the player’s clbum.
@player_location – returns the player’s location from their profile. (One randomly generated from a list if no location is entered)
@player_interest – returns a random interest from the comma-separated list of interests from their profile. (One randomly generated from a list if no interests are entered)
@player_occupation – returns the occupation listed on the player’s profile. (One randomly generated from a list if no occupation is entered) (view post) |

OK, I’m a bit confused here. I thought the whole idea is to reward people who successfully contribute to Forumbuildr. According to the scores on DeviousArts forum, there is one person who had five successful submissions, two people who had four submissions, six with three submissions, 15 with two submissions, and 64 with one submission. How many people had none of their submissions accepted? We don’t see that score, but I’m betting it’s in the hundreds. According to this system, every single player who contributed to Forumbuildr, with the possible exception of the top nine who had more than two picked, all get hit with the -1 penalty. It’s inevitable to get a bunch of contributions with -5 votes. That’s part of the creative process, most people have a handful of hits, and a bunch of misses.
What’s the percentage of people who got this -1 submission penalty who had at least one submission accepted? What’s the percentage of the all people who participated in Forumbuildr who had the +2 submission bonus?
This seems like a wonderful way to discourage success. A handful of Flezz is trivial compared to the thrill of watching your contributions gather votes and having your submissions picked. Now, it appears that you’re punishing almost everyone, even the people who did have a successful contribution. The people who had one submission accepted but the rest voted down have the same score as someone with nothing accepted. I could have posted seven typical posts saying “ack ptptpth”, got -5s for all of them, and still have the same score as the vast majority of contributors.
I was under the impression that people who had submissions picked would be rewarded with extra submissions, encouraging the people with good ideas. Is this -1 submission penalty great timesulative? If I contribute to this week’s ForumBuildr, and I don’t get a bumload of successful contributions, will I have -2 submissions next week? Will it go down to zero in a couple of weeks? Please give more detail about how these scores are calculated if you can. I love writing for Forumbuildr, but it’s not nearly as much fun if we’re getting the stick and not the carrot. (view post) |

The idea of Sacred Lies is pretty important concept for me as well. I always saw it in stages:
1) This stuff is really serious, I had better study it. 2) This stuff is a load of dingo’s kidneys, I got ripped off. 3) This stuff is a load of dingo’s kidneys, but then again, so is everything else. 4) This makes just as much sense as the others, so what the hell. 5) This is more fun than sitting in a dusty church somewhere and being lectured by smarmy guys in good suits.
If you want an inspiring perspective on Sacred Lies, check out “Cat’s Cradle” by Vonnegut. Bokonon is a Discordian saint for a damn good reason. (view post) |

DiscordianismI, Lactose the Intolerant, Existentialist Chimneysweep, Cavalier du l’Esprit d’Esclair, Soldier of Misfortune, proclaim you all to be heretics, you are more debased than that white crust that deodorant leaves on the underarms of clothes. May you all reincarnate as a Republican Senator’s page!
In other words, Hey guys!
OK, now that that’s done with, I’d just like to say that I’m glad to see that there are people with a keen appreciation for absurdity here. May St. Yossarian watch over you all, and may you always see the Fnords. That is all. (view post) |

How we plan to improve ForumBuildr!A suggestion for monitoring the Klan-based mbum downvoting and upvoting… could the Forumbuildr Reports have a few voting statistics? Maybe something like:
1) Accepted Submissions by Klan (including non-Klan aligned submitters) – a good way to see if one Klan dominates… not foolproof, as one might expect to see the largest Klans with the most accepted submissions, but if one klan is only 50% bigger than another klan, but has triple the accepted submissions, you know something’s up. Also, if non-aligned submitters are getting hosed, this would show it.
2) Upvote-to-downvote ratio per member by Klan (including non-Klan aligned players)... bigger is better here, I’d think, within reason. I would rather see vote inflation than see everyone crippled by people out to ruin someone else’s fun, though a decent balance is better still.
One possibile use for this ratio is to warn players who exceed a certain threshhold… maybe 3-to-1? You get a warning or the system prevents you from further voting if you downvote three times as often as upvoting (or vice versa.) You’d need to balance out the voting to be able to downvote further. Sure, a crappy submission is still plain old ****, but now there’s the pbum voting option for the average-but-not-awful submissions. You can pbum judgement on a submission that you think is pbumable but barely so, and save downvotes for the real ****ty posts. I think that once you consider the pbum option, the crap-to-creative ratio is pretty even.
I’m sure there are more reports that might help to reveal potential cheating. It’s also nice to be able to see the statistics. The Forumbuildr, IMNSHO, is the best part of the game. Like all similar community-based forums, it can be easily abused by bumhats. I for one will continue to contribute even if there’s no scoops awarded or if everyone downvotes all of my submissions. It’s just plain fun. Hopefully, careful balancing will make it even more fun. (view post) |
