If I was English (I am), I wouldn’t know what people are so worked up about. Some guy was not quite able to kick a ball past some other guys, OH NO MY NATIONAL PRIDE IS SEVERELY INJURED.
In times past (and I mean a long time past), sports were a way to prepare children for war, by building athleticism and teaching some dumbed down versions of battle strategy. Seems kinda lame that grown adults can make a career out of what used to be a childish pursuit (can’t really blame them for trying though, the pay’s good), but also that other grown adults are so engrossed in watching them do so, to the point of mbumive emotional investment in the sporting performance of total strangers.
People “crying themselves to sleep”, fighting and killing opposing supporters, I believe I remember hearing about one guy cutting off his own balls because his team lost (there may also have been heavy drinking and a bet/dare involved, but the point stands). It all seems so hideously excessive.
