These are more commonly known as web bugs. They’ve been around for a long time, they’re nothing like what Shallow claims to have been doing, and they’re mostly harmless. Yahoo is by no means the first to use them, too. Heck, Forumwarz itself has them all over it. Download the Ghostery add-on if you want to be informed of when you’re on a page with them. (This is most pages.)

These are a bit more sophisticated. They aren’t cookie based; but ActiveX based, which means that any time you log on, they could be temporarily installing such a beacon on your actual computer, not just tracking your IP.
