Actually, If you sign up the required number of people, you probably will get the Ipod.
The way it works, I think, is that when you sign up you have to chose a free offer, such as Lovefilm. The site you signed up with gets a commission, and after a certain number of commissions, they have enough money to get you your Ipod. So, basically it’s a pyramid scheme.
Of course, I expect that there are other elements involved, but that pretty much it in a nutshell.
