Euphorbia Resinifera(Resin Spurge) is a succulent plant, superficially similar to a cactus (an example of convergent evolution in a similar semi-desert climate), which is native to the Atlas Mountains of Morocco.

The latex of E. Resinfera contains large quantities of resiniferatoxin (RTX), an ultrapotent capsaicin analog; hence, all parts of the plant are poisonous if ingested, causing nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. Contact with skin causes redness and swelling followed blisters.

As RTX acts on the nerves which transmit pain, the irritant effect of skin contact is followed by desensitization and analgesia. Research is being conducted at the National Institutes of Health and the University of Pennsylvania to design a novel clbum of analgesics from it.
