Mesembryanthemum tortuosum (aka Sceletium tortuosum) a hardy ground cover with sea-anemone flowers that grows in the Cape Provinces of South Africa, commonly known as Kanna.

This plant contains the alkaloids mesembrine and mesembrenine which seem to have mainly a narcotic effect, producing delirium, sedation, loss of appetite, and depression. These alkaloids are particularly powerful as analgesics; under their effects, it is reported that the body feels numb and is immune to pain such as that of beestings.
