Will my choice of language affect my character later on? And I’m having a little trouble justifying how a former soldier, current mercenary leans Alchemy. 2 ranks should do it, I guess, and the rest… can I put any more points in Intimidate?

Is it just us three for the campaign?

To a certain extent. Speaking Abyssal has the tendency to drag you deeper and further into the depths of chaos and evil, not to mention attract the attention of the demonic, while Infernal drags you towards a more ordered sort of evil and attracts the devilish. Mechanically, there’s no difference as far as the PRC is concerned, but character-wise, it depends on which way you want to go.

As a suggestion, here’s a bit of backstory for your character. Feel free to alter or reject it as you will. While still a fresh-faced recruit to the army, Zak bunked with a dwarven alchemist named Vlel Stonecutter. The two of them bonded through the hardship of training and war: nothing builds trust and rapport between two people than saving his life from an explosion of alchemist fire flung by a gnomish warmachine.

But the fates are never kind: Vlel caught a crossbow bolt in the chest as he shoved you away from the sights of a gnoll marksman on the opposite side of the trench. You can still remember the expression on his face as his bandolier of alchemist fire began to shatter, one after another, and how he went down silently, not even screaming when the acid flasks began to explode. You tried to put the flames out with your bare hands, but your commander dragged you away, all this while screaming for the platoon’s sorcerer to cover the retreat.

He was your only friend, and he had died saving you. You, with your worthless, decadent, empty existence. Vlel had so much to live for: a home to return to, a wife who loved him dearly, a little girl who he has not seen for years… and he saved you instead.

The next day, you volunteered for the Obsidian Legion. There were no “friends” in the Legion: each man looked after himself as best as he could and trusted no one beyond the length of his sword. Sure, there was much drinking and laughter and whoring together at the end of a job, but you weren’t “friends”. The drink and the drugs made it easier to forget everything you’ve seen and done: and, as far as “doing things” went, the Legion did everything.

The Legion is also made up by a lot of half-fiends, most of whom speak Abyssal or Infernal. You choose which one you want. Log in to see images!
