Well, I’ve been getting the RPG urge lately, and I’ve bene able to find any to my liking that my PC can handle. My PC isn’t the greatest
2.2 GHz Proc 2 gigs ram integrated graphics
and not being to knowledgeable about older games, I come to you FWZ.
I mainly want a game with a leveling system, with perhaps a skill system. |

There’s a game I’ve been playing non-stop since late October called Sengoku Rance. It’s half visual novel, half tactical RPG. It’s sort of like Pokemon with people, but set in a bizarre, alternate fantasy-world inspired warring-states era Japan. Pretty much any kind of fictional archetype (aliens, demons, gods) make appearances.
It is also a porn game, so I hope you have the stomach for some really kinky stuff. |

Eh, I’d prefer a game that I can play in broad daylight with family around. |

Then go with the clbumics. Baldur’s Gate and Baldur’s Gate II.
The original is basically one of the early “you do whatever the heck you want” kind of games. It’s extremely open ended, although to win you have to beat the main quest. Most of the later RPGs that were opened ended took a page from BG.
It was designed for Pentium I computers, so it’s pretty old by today’s standards (11 years) and has horrible resolution for most monitors these days. BG2 allows for higher resolution shots, but it’s a whole different plot.
Most people who play the BG series seem to start with BG2 for some reason, probably because it was the newer and graphically superior game, but I think the writing for BG1 was probably better. Very nicely woven plot lines, particularly the Durlag’s Tower and Isle in the Northern Sea adventure. Oh, same with Werewolf Isle; all three are in the expansion set, Tales of the Sword Coast. |

For old games?
Betrayal at Krondor is the often overlooked sequel to the critically acclaimed Betrayal at Krondor, and while it’s supposedly not nearly as good it’s still an entertaining game in its own right. It also has kick-arse music, the theme to Haldon Head is really creepy.
Er, Jedi Knight was an early FPS with RPG elements, there was a point awardee system based on actions taken in the game and secret levels found. It’s not nearly as convoluted a game as, say, Knights of the Old Republic and is set immediately following the Galactic Civil War, so most of the “bad” prequel elements aren’t seen in the game. Instead, it feels like SW Episode VII in game form.
Graphics haven’t held well over the years though. |

There’s also some like the clbumics but slightly different. Such as Arcanum Take Baldur’s Gate, but set it in a Steampunk era, with magic still. There’s also Temple of Elemental Evil. Actually uses D&D 3.5 rules almost solely. There’s a few differences here and there because things wouldn’t work exactly the same. And there’s Siege of Avalon. It’s a lot like the rest, but claims that it’s a fantasy RPG book. It’s lying. They call themselves a book because the separate parts in the game are sectioned off and called “Chapters” |

If you’re into text games, all the old Infocom games are available here and probably elsewhere as well. |

Morrowind is probably one of the best RPGs I ever played. I played it twice through normally, then played it two more times through with enhancement mods. I’ll probably play it again some day, as well. |

The first KOTOR is the best PC RPG I have ever played. Your computer should be able to run it on low. The game is a must-play for any RPG fan. |

Yeah, that’s what I’ve been thinking of doing.(I have a account at romulation that has 33,000 points, so I pretty much have mostly every game available to me.)
I’ll also give KotOR a try, as well as planescape. CrinkzPipe edited this message on 11/19/2009 4:15AM |
