The original is basically one of the early “you do whatever the heck you want” kind of games. It’s extremely open ended, although to win you have to beat the main quest. Most of the later RPGs that were opened ended took a page from BG.
It was designed for Pentium I computers, so it’s pretty old by today’s standards (11 years) and has horrible resolution for most monitors these days. BG2 allows for higher resolution shots, but it’s a whole different plot.
Most people who play the BG series seem to start with BG2 for some reason, probably because it was the newer and graphically superior game, but I think the writing for BG1 was probably better. Very nicely woven plot lines, particularly the Durlag’s Tower and Isle in the Northern Sea adventure. Oh, same with Werewolf Isle; all three are in the expansion set, Tales of the Sword Coast.
