We have been running rampant with all ideas/images being removed from ItemBuildr a few times in a row, now. This has made me questioning downvoting on ItemBuildr yet again.
Let’s compare downvoting situations on ForumBuildr and ItemBuildr:
ForumBuildr: A single user can send 7 submissions with a buildr score of 0, and he can send more submissions through the week. It’s fairly easy to get your buildr score up, and forumbuildr ends up cluttered with hundreds of submissions to vote, not counting the ones that end up downvote and the newly submitted ones. Downvoting is necessary since it cleans up the trash, and without it we’d get near 1k submissions per week easily. Analyzing that many submissions is a real burden.
ItemBuildr: A single user can send 1 item idea and 1 image per submission round, and he can’t send anymore during the voting round. As such, users only get to vote on 1 submission per player, and with enough of an effort, a group of players can eliminate everything from the voting round. It has been done before. Since there’s no way to renew submissions on itembuildr, downvoting ends up eating everything, making it disadvantageous for the players and requiring CZ interference to get said item made.
So, here’s my arguments. You’ll always have a set number of ideas/images to vote, and you can vote at all of them at once. There’s no room to clear excessive submissions since there’s no excessive submissions.
Put your thoughts here. |

Yet another thread on a single subject. Anyway, voted yes. |

At least I tried to summarize and compare it to an aspect that NEEDS downvoting. >_> |

Fran: That’s a very strong and clear presentation of the reasons behind eliminating downvoting from ItemBuildr versus why it’s necessary for ForumBuildr. I’m going to repost & link that into the CZ/Mod discussion.
Would you mind reposting that into the Suggestions Compilation thread? |

I think I’ve learned something today. That is not only an excellent argument as to why down voting should be eliminated in itembuildr, but a really good reason (that I had never considered) why down voting is necessary in Forumbuildr. Voted yes and upvoted the post. |

Why not just make it so that if there’s only one thing left on itembuildr it wins by default? |

That’s the other problem. It’s still unfair voting by klans. They’re not downvoting their klanmates picture/idea so it’s likely the only one standing. This “cheating” should not be rewarded. I know it’s not cheating per se, I couldn’t find the word I wanted, but you get my meaning. |

Because it could be highly abused? People would bumign their klans to simply pbum on his submission and downvote everything else, maybe also downvote it to -4 so you don’t get any suspicions. |

Because even without issues of collusion and vote-fixing, it would reward the last-downvoted submission, not the best one. bumuming a streak of heavy downvoting, it’s just a “Who’s listed last” contest, not a contest of skill. |

I’d still like to have the downvote option on itembuildr, but maybe make it so you have to go -10 or perhaps stay at -5 for an hour before bottoming out. |

How would people feel about weighting downvotes as an option? Like, say, +1 for an upvote, 0 to pbum, -.5 for a downvote? Takes longer to downvote a submission, and makes it easier for upvoters to keep folks from downvoting reasonable ideas into oblivion? |

Rampant downvoters would still kill submissions, it would take more, but that’s about it. |

‘strue, but at least it’d take a dozen off the bat, and two more for every supporter. Personally, I’m AOK with eliminating downvoting on Itembuildr right away. |

Really, great explanation. But, I’d like to ask a question:
Although Image submissions are in fairly decent numbers to vote on, one day, idea submissions will be numerous too. What to do when they get too tiresome to vote on too?
I think downvoting should be removed from Image voting, and KJ’s thought should be implemented on Idea voting. |
