I think it’d be better if the keyboard short-cut for returning to the list of threads was Backspace and the short-cut to find a new thread to pwn was Enter, because that takes less time. :>
Also: The javascript alerts really disrupt the battle flow if you press a bumon a second too early. Perhaps something less disruptive, like a bar appearing over the toolbar saying “you can’t do that” or just a red X being drawn over the option. DG-Root edited this message on 12/14/2008 1:51PM |

I like the red X idea. It would be present when the key is being pressed, so it would flash and get your attention. |

Wholeheartedly support changing/removing the popups. |

When you use an ability that hasn’t cooled down yet, the ability should flash and the number appear somewhat more noticable (Red? Yellow?). When you use an ability that requires more energy than you currently have, the ability should flash along with your energy meter and counter. |

The only problem I have with the popups is how untidy the implementation is – having to click through multiple popups to continue pwning after 1 fumble.
So I support removing the popups, but only if it’s replaced with some other time penalty e.g. a 2 second pause when no action can be taken. There’s not much skill involved in the pwning part of this game, but choosing your actions in the correct order and timing them properly, is it. |

That would be fine, really. Though it would be nice if xss/fbo didn’t do this, as I usually have them at 1/2, and due to lag sometimes accidentally press them when trying to get to the next thread in a speed run.
Lag tolerance in speed runs for people w/ ****ty computers would be fair too, but whatever. |

Agreed…If there was no delay or consequence, speedruns would only be as good as the player’s internet connection. |

Actually. There should just be an option to turn off some of the animation (particularly anything involving transparacy/fading). Keep the timing the same, just make it less pretty. That way, if you had a crappy computer timing would be about the same but you wouldn’t mess up because they page didn’t update fast enough (the betwen-threads page is the main culprit there).
EDIT: also, moving the popups to javascript would be better, as javascript works the same (mostly) on all computers, but some handle popups differently. For example, I uses focus-follows-mouse and have window entrance animations, so those windows tend to be a lot worse for me than other people. Many systems have other similar differences in implementation, so how easy/difficult it is to dismiss the popus probably varies greatly. Neona edited this message on 12/14/2008 3:39PM |

Using a number key to find the next thread with Enter to go back is fairly well placed, as long as you’re using the Numpad, it’s all within reach of your right hand without needing to move it.
But I agree with losing the pop-ups, a little flash on the attack as previously suggested, would work better. |

Try hitting the “1” key at any point when the toolbar is inactive (forum view, successful pwn, loading screen).
Seems that the number keys are tied to the thread “numbers” (and there’s always a 1 until you pwn the forum).
Handy shortcut, really needs to be dogreat timesented better.
edit: bah, above beat me to it, but hah, I explained it better, lol
edit: also 170th, 180th, the whole “get rid of those popup windows” thing. Extremely annoying. You can dismiss them with the spacebar though. FalconFour edited this message on 12/15/2008 7:14AM |
