I’ma get the ball rolling.
Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne
Genre: JRPG
Premise/Story: Your well-like teacher is in hospital, you go to visit her. The place is abandoned, and you find a creepy dude who wants to destroy the world or something. Your teacher saves you from the demon he summons. Then the world ends, and you become a demon. In the first 5 minutes. You get to find out what the **** happened, how to rebuild the world, and ultimately, what sort of world to make it into. The story generally takes 2nd place to the gameplay throughout the game, but often is rather interesting during its high points.
Gameplay: I despise the analogy (the SMT series did the idea of ‘recruiting almost any enemy’ first, and better IMO), but think Pokemon with demons. You get one ‘turn’ for each person in your party, but can use only half of one for striking a weak spot, lose 2 for missing/ineffective attacks, or all for having attacks reflect on you/get absorbed. So naturally, exploiting weaknesses and protecting yours plays a BIG part in strategies.
This game is hard. VERY hard. It’s not unlikely that you’ll lose the very first fight, despite only being able to attack. The game explains stuff well, but loves to throw curveballs at you and force you to think carefully rather than just recklessly using your strongest moves. If your main dude ever dies, you lose. Given the prevalence of instant-death spells and strong-bum enemies, this happens a lot, especially if you’re not careful about which set of strengths and weaknesses you set. Don’t expect any pity here. However, the game’s so damn fun you’ll keep wanting more.
You can recruit almost any demon you encounter, provided you’re at an appropriate level. You can them fuse them to make more badbum ones, or to refine traits to aid against certain bosses. There are a total of 6 endings with a fair few sidequests, leading to some decent replayability. This is a LONG game, will easily take about 50 hours at least, probably more if you get stuck on certain bosses (which you WILL).
Graphics: As you can imagine, this is not a happy cheery game. It’s all done in a cel-shaded look, and is generally rather oppressive and gloomy-looking. The art direction is fantastic, the enemies generally look pretty awesome, and there are some dungeons that will make you want to just sit around and admire the scenery. The game has a great atmosphere to it, especially if you find occult-themed stuff kinda cool.
Music/Sound: Sound effects are pretty standard fare, nothing groundbreaking, but effective for how they’re used. No voice-acting is present. The music, however, I just love. Like the graphics, it contributes a lot to an oppressive, gloomy atmosphere during general exploration and story parts, but during battles is a different story. Think a sort of Japanese-centric techno-rock hybrid with a demonic feel to it. I don’t think my description does it justice, but it’s just awesome to hear and I don’t recall it ONCE getting old. There are some really nice piano-heavy pieces too.
TL;DR Version: If you like RPGs and can take a decent challenge, I almost guarantee you will love this game. I think the SMT series is easily one of the most underrated RPG series, and shining examples of GOOD JRPGs.
Oh, and watch out for stupidly-dressed skeletons. Seriously. Log in to see images! |

Man, I feel like a loser for taking 100 hours to beat it.
This is probably my favorite also. The first game I played in the SMT group was Digital Devil Saga, but Nocturne is much better. |

lol, I think my first clocked in at 80, but then that wasn’t even doing all the Amala Network. Log in to see images!
Yeah, I loved the DDS games too. Nocturne was a lot more customizable, DDS felt more like a ‘traditional’ JRPG. DDS 1&2’s gameplay wasn’t as good, but the overall story was totally worth it. I’m hoping Atlus will actually announce SOMETHING about SMT4 sometime, they’ve had it hanging in obscurity for years now. Something_Witty edited this message on 09/29/2008 5:14AM |

eh **** it i’m throwing this in Touhou Series Genre: Shmup, with emphasis on pretty bullets Story/Premise: Not that important, but basically X happens so you go and find out why and stop it. Gameplay: You control a character with a tiny hitbox, and the bullets have small hitboxes as well. There are many bullets in formations which are aimed at you, away from you, or in pretty patterns. You shoot at things until they die or go away, and avoid the bullets. There are other mechanics which are just fancy and don’t really matter to the overall point. It is extremely difficult, but I’m drawn to that kind of game where it’s pure skill and very little luck. Graphics: The bullets are colorful and pretty, and the backgrounds are nice. The portraits leave a lot to be desired, but whatever, right? Music/Sound: It’s a lot of clbumicalish stuff with other genres mixed in. The sound fits the game quite well, with portions set to the music. For instance, at one stage the enemies get more and more intense as the song gets more intense, until the song crescendos and the midboss flies in, throwing star-shaped bullet formations at you. It’s ****ing great. TL;DR: difficult but fun
to be honest the touhou series isn’t my favorite game but it’s definitely got a lot of replay value for me and i’m still working on it after like 8 months or something insane like that i don’t really have a favorite game but american mcgee’s alice really sticks out there for some reason |

It also took me closer to 100 hours to finish Nocturne. Mostly because I was pretty much hell-bent on completing the Demonic Compendium. I’m still upset that I went into the Tower of Kagatsuchi before finishing the Labyrinth of Amala, thus missing out on getting Pierce for my main character. Which is why I need to replay this. Seriously.
Also: I also dislike the Pokemon analogy. Mostly because the Megaten series came into being long before Pokemon did.
Anyway. On to my favourite game…
StarCraft
I’ll admit that this one largely remains at the top of my list due to nostalgia. But that doesn’t diminish my appreciation for it in any way.
This was the first game I played where the story really managed to draw me in and make me feel as if I was a part of it. It made me feel as if I were more than just a pbumive observer. And it ended up leaving quite an impression on my impressionable teenage mind.
What really extended this game’s lifespan for me was the multiplayer aspect. Countless hours were wasted and countless petty rivalries turned serious thanks to this game. And all of that because of my really bad habit of dark templar rushing one of my friends each time he decides to play Terran. |

I sorta have two depending how you see it.
.hack seris, and the .hack//G.UI seris
Genre: RPG/Hack and slash.
Desc.: Basicly in the .hack seris you are thrown into a MMORPG called “The world” The whole plot revolves around these corrupted data, and people hacking “The World” They make this realistic by having a computer main screen, where you can check e-mails, read various boards, and log-in into the world. In .hack//GU you are thrown into the world as before, but it seems the hero from the last games .hack, has become evil. He turns the main character into a level 1 player and he swears revenge for putting his e-love into a coma. The basic plot revolved around these hacked monsters destroy players characters and putting them into a coma in real life. GU is much better than .hack. .hack has 4 games. GU has 3.
TL;DR Awesome game about a rpg in a MMORPG pick up GU if you can only get 1 of the 2. |

there’s a bunch and post more info tomorrow after my midterm for now
Penumbra Overture: Mood, tone, ambiance. The game tells its story through physical interaction and minimalist graphics. It features appropriate music and background noise. All aspects of the game compliment each other, creating an absolutely ****ing terrifying world that’s incredibly awesome. It’s not without its pitfalls, but overall the quality of the atmosphere in the game is not matched by any other game I’ve played in recent memory.
my other faves are ones like pokemon gameboy, zeldaLog in to see images! |

Tales of Destiny 2 (PSX)
because it had coool graphics (2d sprite) and coool music and coool story and coool battle system. Playability is also pretty high. I was sad when I beat the game, cause it’s over boohoo (I’ve done all sidequests I think) |
