Tegan & Sara? They’re alright, I guess.
If you’re looking for good Canadian pop in that vein, you can’t go wrong with the Meligrove Band. I’d describe them as being of Montreal-like, but with somewhat better chops and none of that band’s “psychedelic” frippery. Of course, what do I know about music? Log in to see images!

I felt horribly cheated when I listened to a few tracks by those guys after hearing them described like that. Why? is many things – hip-trip-or-whatever-hop is not one of them. Log in to see images! xXxJUNEGUY1xXx edited this message on 06/21/2008 1:58AM |

Why? is so hip.
The Vowels beat reminds me of The Islands “Where There’s a Will There’s a Whalebone.”

Anyhoo, here’s someone I think more people should listen to: Piper Davis. She does a really interesting yet familiar and accessible blend of funky beats and soulful vocals, which is backed both by prerecorded sounds as well as a live band. She’s fairly good-looking, too! Log in to see images!
As far as I know, she’s only released one EP, but she’s done collaborations with a few other artists (according to her MySpace). Hopefully she’ll make some kind of breakthrough soon! (Not too fast though! Log in to see images! |

It is p cool. They only have two songs at the moment I think but are bringing out an LP next year? Woo.

I just read through this whole thread(yes I have no life) and I’ve gotta say…you guys are good.A lot of those bands I had never heard of before. Here’s my list and for the record I’ve been in love with Tegan and Sara for the pas 5 years, then again I am Canadian!Log in to see images!
You Say Party! We Say Die! – Electronic dance rock. For fans of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs. They’re a little more umh artsy though. Mother Mother – Okay so I can really describe these guys except to say, they are story telling minstrels on crack. If you like Tenacious D and country you should like them.British Colombian born and raised. Thao and the Get Down Stay Down – It’s basically this girl named Thao Nguyen playing amazing guitar and rocking amazing songs.I have to say her voice is a little rocky but her melodies are super cool. Mates Of State – The play a lot of electronic organ and percussion. And they’re married….oh and they’re totally insane. You’ll never anything like them trust me.If you like you music whimsical(did I spell that right?)you’ll like them.
There’s so much more but my fingers are tired so enjoyLog in to see images! |

Dash the bumbumin: Rock, good lyrics [though vocalist can be hard to understand], talent all around.
http://www.garageband.com/artist/dashthebumbumin
Others more widely known…
E.S. Posthumus: Dramatic instrumental stuff, like used in epic movies.
Judee Sill: Log in to see images! voice, spiritualish lyrics.
The Mars Volta: Ultimately less discordant than it has any right to be.
Midlake: I only have this one song, Roscoe, as I haven’t been able to find the album in the one local CD store, but I like the offbeat lyrics and the wistful sound.
Tanghetto: Tango music. Just sounds cool.
We Are Scientists: More rock. I think the trailer for Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist used a song from Brain Thrust Mastery, which was mildly annoying. Their website is kinda ****ing hilarious.
Keane: Just kinda gorgeous all around. Never going to get over Somewhere Only We Know or Nothing In My Way, methinks. Perfect Symmetry was a bit of a dud, imho, but still decent.
And for clbumics: Floyd, Zep, Hendrix, Joplin, Queen, Beatles, Velvet Underground. |
