From what I’ve heard, the things you get for being on the leaderboard at the end of a season are bragging rights, a distinction and a title. There’s an extra reward for being first place that is actually useful, but IIRC it’s only temporary and you lose it at the beginning of season 3.

So I don’t think it is important to care about the leaderboard unless you really want to have all the distinctions. Which I don’t.
