In the time I’ve been here, and looking at past threads before that time, I have seen a lot of change in the posting style of RP flamebait. The early threads had an unrefined, random feel to them. There was no established etiquette because everything was so new, and there were really yet no prominent examples of style to go by or emulate.
Sometime around 2008 RP flamebait began to “find itself”; the people who most correctly expressed the sentiments of others were paid more attention, while others who did not resound with their audience were regarded less. Consequently, many of those who did not fit in left. Alliances were formed. Responses to given posts became more predictable as these social mores began to emerge.
Incidentally what emerged was, at least in a very large part, a very emotionless and dry sense of humor among RP flamebaiters. This was neither right or wrong, just how many felt and chose to express themselves. I believe although this kind of theme will always be at the heart of RP flamebait, at its unceasing central core — it can not stand the test of time in it’s purist form or resist it’s own evolution.
Namely, people want to be entertained. Nobody comes on here to be bored. Many welcome a more editorial or clever style; I, among others, strive for that on the ever so flippant occasion…
While such sentiments are not without adamant opposition by those who seek to preserve what they’ve grown accustomed to, the times are changing, and I believe a great many new users (as well as some of the older ones) would like to see an RP environment more congruent to producing fun and interesting content. |
