there is a section of desert near the city where people dump the pets they can not take care of. This includes both dogs and cats as well as horses from near by ranches. In addition to pets they also find pack animals like mules who were used to traffic drugs across the border. These mules are often found still alive with parts of their spine exposed from the constant rubbing of the saddles used to harbor drugs.
