Don’t burn business bridges. Backing out will sound like an excuse no matter what you come up with. Do a decent job, keep it average – don’t break your bum making it awesome. Afterwards, make it clear that it is a one time thing, a favor that you are doing because you like him. When you finish just say something like, “You caught me at the right time, I promised myself I wouldn’t do anything like this for others any more!” That way if he asks in the future you can say that you meant it.
