Being new is nothing to be ashamed about. No one starts out knowing everything. And I agree with you: how do you know they weren’t exploiting? You can’t. How do you know they (the hypothetical cheater) weren’t trying to prove a point? Well, it seems to me that the easiest indication would be if they took advantage of it to win, rather than just to make a huge impact. Another indication is if they submitted a bug report about it.
