A Canadian man who played Xbox games for 50 hours almost non-stop was hospitalized after finishing his mammoth session at home, authorities said on Monday.

The 28-year-old man, identified only by his family name Ward, had been playing on-line battle simulation games on his Xbox in the coastal city of Vancouver, police said.

Ward had planted himself in front of an Xbox to play on-line games on May 16. He only left the spot over the next three days to go to the toilet and take brief naps on a makeshift bed, they said.

“We presume the cause of his collapse was heart failure stemming from exhaustion,” a Vancouver provincial police official said by telephone.

Ward had recently took a break from his job to spend more time playing games, CBCNews reported after interviewing his work colleagues and neighbors.

After he failed to attend the weekly meeting, Ward’s colleagues tried to contact him but he wasn’t picking up the phone. When they reached his house, he was already lying unconscious on the floor.

He was immediately hospitalized. The doctor said he was no longer in danger, however he would have to stay in the hospital for at least three weeks.

Canada, one of the most wired countries in the world, has a large and highly developed game industry.
