FFX was okay. One problem was that it seemed they spent so much time creating pretty 3D PS2 graphics that they skimped on the story. (Fake religion is nothing new in FF, that didn’t bother me at all.) Also, the voice actors were so-so. Also, they had a number of action minigames that you needed to do to get items, like “dodging lightning”. (The point of Final Fantasy-type games is that you don’t NEED reflexes or finger skill to finish them.)
The real problem was with FFX-2. While FFX at least tried to have a serious story, X-2 had the serious priestess girl Yuna running around in hot pants (an infamous poster had her in a pose that plagiarized Lara Croft). A large part of the game was action-based, and there was all this stuff about dressing up the female characters in different outfits (at one point one of the producers said that he’d wanted to have a French maid outfit in the game).
So, nowadays when you play FFX and try to get into the dramatic story, you can’t help thinking about hot pants and French maid outfits. FFX-2 retroactively made FFX a worse game. That’s one of the main reasons I haven’t bought a Squenix game for years. |
