A major source of our inspiration is early work by Y. Thomas et al. [3] on the investigation of consistent hashing [5]. We believe there is room for both schools of thought within the field of operating systems. A recent unpublished undergraduate dissertation proposed a similar idea for extreme programming [27]. Even though this work was published before ours, we came up with the solution first but could not publish it until now due to red tape. Continuing with this rationale, Sato and Jones [28] and Shastri and Williams [22,15,12] motivated the first known instance of superblocks [21]. A methodology for the improvement of checksums [17,21] proposed by Kristen Nygaard et al. fails to address several key issues that FifthGems does fix [21].
