Essentially, as an extreme Libertarian (withdraw everything from overseas, shut down most of the Federal Government, etc.), he has huge support from wackos, conspiracy theorists, and social outcasts, which describes a large swath of the Internet.

And as always with the Internet, something that grabs a hold of a small, dedicated following usually ends up whipping that following into a frenzy of sound, fury, and self-declared awesomeness which never actually materializes in the real world – see Snakes On A Plane as an example. Ron Paul supporters would show up in forums, talk to each other about how great Ron Paul was, tell everyone else about how Ron Paul would save the world, and generally be crazy and weird and not SHUT THE **** UP. As a result, many trolls began emulating these true-believers because nothing trolls better than a well-meaning insane person with a loose grip on the fact but a fervent desire to talk to you about stuff.
