It actually encrypts your **** so that it is truly impossible to view it without the key. Anything else is just stashing it somewhere and hoping nobody spots it.

This, plus the fact that TrueCrypt is ridiculously easy to use. Save all the encrypted **** as “favorite volumes” and then you can just run TrueCrypt, press Mount Favorite Volumes, enter the pbumword and access your encrypted files as if they were on a real disk drive.
