I’d recently bought/equipped a few things which should have increased my Offense a few points, but to my dismay, they didn’t. And in fact, when I re-equipped my previous items, my stats LOWERED.

See the lowering when re-equiped is why i think it’s the server getting horribly confused.

I think it has to do with equipping something while something else is still equipped. It unequips the old one, then either unequips it again or simply doesn’t equip the new one, but flags it that it is equipped.

when you go to equip something else, it unequips the current item. But you don’t have the stat boost from it since it isn’t actually equipped, so it subtracts the item’s stats anyway.

That’s probably not helpful to anyone at all but I’m now even more certain that that’s the order of events that leads up to negative stats.
