Catcher in the Rye is one of those books you read expecting it to identify with you, but I read it and at the end I was just feeling like “What?” Sure I bet the chump who was narrating felt all original back when he wrote the book. Now, though, people have imitated it so much it’s like his opinions have become so commonplace they’re just phony.

I kind of felt the same way when I first read it, but as time went on I grew to appreciate it as a brilliant portrayal of adolescence.

The book isn’t about Holden’s opinions, it’s about what he’s experiencing.
