Before they decided to make very special decisions such as “no support for multiplayer over a lan”. The one aspect that turned StarCraft from a game that would have entertained me for a month or two to a game that managed to entertain me for a few years.
That aspect alone has made me move StarCraft 2 from my “day one purchase” list to my “pirate out of spite” list. |

the only reason people cared about lan, was because most people were connecting to the net through dial-up still. hook up to a router and find each other on battle net like everyone else. |

I used to always get the Oreo Blizzard, but I had the Heath Bar Blizzard once and it was very good. M&M one has a nice crunch. |

Honestly I’ve never like Blizzards, I don’t like stuff in my ice cream, it should be smooth.
Also, LAN is great, especially for huge LAN parties like Fragapalooza up here in Edmonton, while on Battlenet, half the players are way too good at the game and make it kinda not fun for those of us who don’t immediately build 3 barracks right outside everyone else’s base and nuke them within 2 and a hlaf minutes. I much prefer the single player campaign or playing with people I know against the comp in multiplayer levels. |

yeah, Blizzards aren’t exactly my favorite kind of ice cream but still pretty cool. My favorite is either the bumerfingers or Snickers or maybe the cheesecake and strawberry one. |

lan gaming is of course better than online gaming, you can feel the “atmosphere”
although that is mostly the smell of cigarette and urine |

There’s nothing stopping multiple people in the same network from simply going on Battle.net and joining the same game. The only difference is that this requires that each person have a unique CD key. Of course, since they’re releasing 3 “campaign” discs that are each fully multiplayer compatible, there’s reason enough already to have multiple unique CD keys. |

I wonder if their battlenet thing will realize all 8 people playing from the same IP are connected through lan and route traffic locally, rather than sending data for everyone back and forth over the internet.
If it’s like steam and you need to be online to play but it’ll still let you use direct lan play, that’s OK i guess. |

As I recall, Warcraft 3 handles people on LAN in your Battle.net games fine. Starcraft ****s up royally and it’s annoying to try to play with multiple people behind one router because the game can’t figure out how to send packets to the right people. I’m guessing Starcraft 2 will work fine.
As for lacking LAN play, I’m confident that someone will release a hack that lets you connect just fine, just as I’m confident there will still be free B.net servers that don’t need CD-keys. |

I’m also sure that’s going to happen. Problem is, that means Blizzard’s reasoning behind this move is flawed, since it encourages piracy more than it deters it. |

So really this is no different than Valve’s Steam content delivery/DRM software. Not that big a deal, people.
Everyone hates stuff like that but Steam works (rough start but everyone has learned from its horrible issues off the bat) and Blizzard knows they will get the entire asian population murderously angry if they screw it up.
I used to be one of the like seven people in north america who play computer games and didn’t have an internet connection so I know the trauma of getting a game not being able to do anything because it needs to be online. In principle it’s a stupid, unneeded intrusion. However, it’s hard NOT to have an internet connection nowadays. Even if you don’t, your neighbors probably have wifi you can borrow to get online to activate your stuff. TUBSWEETIE edited this message on 07/02/2009 12:17PM |
