Man, way too many to list here. If I had to pick just one game, it would probably be Clue, followed closely by Monopoly. I prefer Monopoly, but Clue is a more social game. In Monopoly, it gets very cutthroat very fast. I actually have to ‘shift gears’ when playing with certain family members, and let certain things slide.
I also just got the card game ‘Monopoly Deal’, which is an interesting twist on the clbumic game. |

Leaving chess aside since I would put it into a category by itself, the best board game I have played is Diplomacy, by a very wide margin.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diplomacy_(game)
No dice, no randomness or luck of any kind other than which nation you start with, just pure strategy and negotiation skills. This game was introduced to me by a high school math teacher who took over the chess club and slowly subverted it into the Diplomacy club. His only rules as far as negotiating with other players: no physical violence and no breaking into each others lockers.
The game’s one fatal flaw is that you need exactly 7 players to play it properly. |

Inconnu Posted: listen, i love Magic:the Gathering. i’ve played it on and off since maybe ‘95 or ‘96. but i think you fail to grasp the concept of a BOARD game. MtG is a CARD game.
there are a few other people in this thread who have made about the same mistake, but i had to point it out with MtG just because…. |

I like Go more than Chess. But I play Pente more than Go because I am lazy. Nine Men’s Morris is my favorite short stone game, but no one will play it with me because I had a rather long winning streak once.
I like Monopoly and Scrabble very much in the clbumic board game line. Also Risk.
In strategic, non-elimination games I love Catan of course, with the Knights and Cities expansion. Carcbumonne, Arkham Horror, and Descent are all fun, though Descent takes *all goddamned day* to play. Race for the Galaxy and its expansion are amazing. I played Puerto Rico once and liked it very much, but I haven’t bought it yet because I usually focus on the two-players so that I can always play them with my comparably game-obsessed husband. |

Fenchurch Posted: I once laid down the word “clitoris” in an online game of Scrabble. That got a laugh out of the female stranger I was playing against. And I was very amused myself. |

Chess: For all the reasons everybody has mentioned.
Risk: It’s fun at first but once the balance of powers shifts in favor of one player it stops being fun for the others.
When I was really young I used to play Risk with my cousins, and since we didn’t understand the rules we sort of made our own. I still think our set rules are better than the official ones. |
