I believe without a flinching doubt that pedophilia is a sexual orientation pedophiles are born with. That is, they cannot control their urges, and they most certainly did not choose to have those urges. Pedophiles do not see children as we see children. Pedophiles see them as any of the rest of us see our partners or crushes. Pedophiles see children just like a schoolboy/girl might see a teacher s/he has a crush on. Pedophiles are just like that — they can’t control it. They just have an affinity for something society deems as inappropriate, because they were born that way.

I agree wholeheartedly that abuse is abuse is abuse, no matter the age. But in 1st world countries there is such a stigma on sex that it leads people to have emotional problems from the guilt of any sexual desire and often many simple sexual experiences. I spent enough time feeling like some sort of sick pervert for the stuff I look at and the fantasies that I have and couldn’t imagine how bad someone who considers masturbation a sin must have it.

I disagree with Cheins that pedophiles are born like they are, they may be born with a predisposition but I don’t think anyone necessarily has 100% set sexuality until later in life, otherwise there would be no such thing as a paraphilia, but I will agree that it isn’t a choice nor is it something that can be changed to any valid degree. This isn’t an argument for legalization, just one for not harming them. Desire doesn’t equal act and if we’re going to start punishing people for things that they think of then we should go arrest anyone who watches an action or horror movie who thinks it would be cool to go out and kick some serious bum since bumault is likewise illegal.

Age is a number and does not in any way affect one’s mental capabilities and sex is an activity like any other and has it’s own risks and benefits. Purposefully exposing someone to sex without letting them know of the risks? I consider that abuse, pregnancy may not be a concern for youth but it will become one, disease isn’t a concern between healthy partners, but can be one with multiple partners. It is akin to something like rock climbing where if you go in unprepared it’s a dangerous mess but if you know of the dangers and take precautions against them it can be great fun.

The ancient Greeks practiced Pederasty where men would take on a boy and act as their mentor and would in some cases have a sexual relationship with them to prepare them for all aspects of life. Socrates for example was mentored in such a fashion and he grew into a very wise man, not some traumatized freak which is what we keep telling people will happen to them. And if you treat someone like a victim, a poor unfortunate person who will no longer ever be normal and will always be unclean they will start to have problems from this.

Age is not the concern, but rather consent and capacity to understand sex (does not have to be penetrative) for what it is and I know of enough adults who treat sex in an irresponsible manner that it disgusts me. I will make no claim to what an age of consent should be, just that we should be looking at sex differently and educating people on it properly. Then we should look into abuse of other kinds and work on solving that. A child forced to play sports to live out the dreams of a parent is being harmed in the exact same way as someone forced into having sex against their will, they don’t have the social stigma bumaulting them but they can just as easily develop problems.

tl;dr: Cheins isn’t automatically wrong, society deals with sex wrong, abuse is bad, sex does not equal abuse.
