There’s a great tradition of stupid humour in this country.
Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales are probably a good starting point — they were very funny. Though there were many serious texts, a lot of what Shakespeare did was nonsense comedy.
And stuff such as Lewis Carroll’s Alice In Wonderland and Edward Lear’s material is utter gibberish. But all are works of genius and loved to this day.
The rest is history. Spike Milligan, Monty Python, Harry Hill, The Mighty Boosh, all good examples of hilarious silliness. So why are we obsessed with silliness? Well it’s probably because the British are the most intelligent race on Earth. Honestly.
You have to have intelligence to have the ridiculous sense of humour we possess. It also helps to have a great literary history. We love things that aren’t right. The further out and the more wrong things are, the more Brits laugh at it. Log in to see images! |
