Diary of Rith Ilralsesh Unknown Date, 1003 Over the past few weeks of travel the surroundings have become increasingly ominous, lush green vegetation giving way to twisted, leafless trees. The joking and bantering has dried up and the dwarves don’t stray far from the camp at night. I am not usually one to fall prey to such pessimism, but my mortality is weighing heavily on me and I have decided to begin recording my experiences. I have lost track of the time… I will have to ask our priest (don’t ask) for the date before I make my next entry.
1st Granite, 1004 By some strange coincidence, the day we finally reached our destination is also the first day of Spring. As we walked this morning, following the river we had been following for months, we could hear the faint sound of a distant waterfall. The sound became louder and louder until at least we stood at the precipice overlooking the place where the river cascaded in a deafening roar, splitting into 2 tributaries down below. The priest signaled us to stop, and shouted over the din that this was the place.

Perhaps I should back up and explain why we had brought a priest along, and indeed, why we had come at all to this forbidding hellhole. It began several months ago in our homeland, Storlutnomal, when the river began to spawn abominations. Children playing near the water began to disappear, and our fisherdwarves would vanish only to reappear a couple weeks later as an undead, a flesh eater. As time went on, the problem became worse instead of better.
So they sent us, 7 dwarves on a mission to find the source of the corruption, contain it and ultimately crush it. Though I have been chosen to manage the details of our labor here, Dobar Stukosber the priest is the only one with the knowledge to effectively combat our otherworldly threat, though I feel that he has been holding back from us. It makes no difference to me as long as he pulls his own weight. Dwarf of God or not, I’m going to make him useful.

We have christened our outpost Uthgurugog, “Demonbane”, a fitting title for the work cut out for us. There’s a great deal of work to do now. There are no mountains here, we will dig down into the silt and rock next to the cursed river, make a home for ourselves, and do the job.

1st granite, continued I no longer doubt the words of our priest. No sooner had we begun unloading the remainder of our food when the master of this place sent his creatures against us. A half-dozen undead carp, flesh long gone, pulled themselves up from the river bank and skittered towards us, ribs moving like a centipede’s legs. Log in to see images! By Limul they were fast! They were almost upon us by the time Zas and Kulet pulled out their hammer and mace, respectively, and smashed them into lifeless heaps. I put them both on active duty and stationed them between the rest of us and the river, though it doesn’t do much to calm our fears. Tosid is mining out an entrance hall as fast as he can. The faster we can go underground the better. BirdofPrey edited this message on 12/29/2008 5:37AMLog in to see images! |

17 Granite, 1004
2 and a half weeks in and our situation is looking up. We’ve managed to move our operation into the underground, where we’re just beginning to carve out a dining hall and construct some furniture for our basic needs, such as beds and chairs. The layer of silt above our dining hall will be ideal for subterranean farming, and I have spotted some visible veins of hematite and bituminous coal. We didn’t bring an anvil with us, so we will have to consider the production of trading goods (bumuming the traders can survive the pbumage).
My main worry now is for the safety of our wood cutters, so I have issued standing orders that nobody can go outside without an armed escort. In conditions such as these, no dwarf is expendable. Log in to see images! |

Today Tosid, the miner, showed me something interesting. Apparently he can dig out a channel large enough to allow water through but too small for carp (unless the carp forcefully squeeze themselves through). This information will be useful when creating our underground reservoir.
He also showed me the design for a system designed to teach dwarves to swim. It looks a little hackneyed but it may be important with all the skeletal critters around that would love to drag us in. Log in to see images! |

25th of Slate, 1004
At last our small team has become self-sufficient! Kubuk is already sowing our new farm with plump helmet spawn and our two fighting dwarves are training in our new barracks. The rest of us are using the barracks as temporary residence while we have real bedrooms dug out.
Yesterday I had a bit of a scare. I popped my head outside to dispose of a dead lizard our cat killed and was immediately pounced on by a skeletal fox! Apparently undead fish aren’t the only creatures we have to worry about. My first instict was to run, but after a few seconds I turned and stood my ground. As it attacked I grabbed its bleached jaws and ripped them open, and then proceeded to dismember the creature bone by bone. All in all, it wasn’t nearly as scary as it looked, though if there had been a group of them I might have been in some trouble. I think when we really settle in here it would be good to rotate our civilians through a basic military training program, at least in unarmed combat. Log in to see images! |

13th Felsite, 1004
Today when digging out an area for a brewery (in this gloomy place we’ll need booze more than ever!) we accidentally broke through to an area overhanging the accursed river. Luckily we were too high up for the undead carp to jump up but the sight of them kept sending my men into a panic. I walled up the hole though, out of sight and out of mind. Our farm is officially started. It’ll be plump helmets for a while, but we didn’t come here for leisure. Log in to see images! |
