Alright, here’s another fail contest idea that I’m going to try and see if it works. It is a level design contest, based on a platformer game that I created a year ago for a school project, called “Twitchout”. You can find the game here:

Now, I will freely admit it’s not the best platformer out there, but for the purposes of this contest it will suffice. This is a speedrun game where the goal is simply to finish the levels as quickly as possible. There are no enemies or combat, but there are obstacles in each level that will hinder your progress such as spikes and colored switch blocks. For each level you have the option of playing on normal or harder difficulty. There is a level editor that comes with the game that allows you to create your own levels with the same functionality as the official levels. Your goal in this contest will be to make a level that is as enjoyable as you can.
Tips on level design: *If you want to know what all the objects do, play the tutorial level. *You can set what difficulty an object will appear on by giving it a value with the “Add/get difficulty” tool. Objects with a zero value will appear on every difficulty. When an object has a value of 1 it will only appear on hard mode, and with a value of -1 it will disappear on hard mode. *Please use only the regular tileset and not any of the experimental tilesets, as they are likely to malfunction. Also, using a dark background color will make it harder to see what’s going on, so light backgrounds are a better idea. *Ask me questions about the game/editor. I know everything about this **** and I can tell you whatever you want.
Rules of the contest: *The contest will end two weeks from now, which is the 19th of February. The winner of the contest is the person who has created the most enjoyable and well-designed level. I choose the winner of the contest, but I will take other people’s opinions into consideration. *The winner will get 5 BP. I might add more prizes if there are a lot of people participating but I won’t promise anything. *When you’ve created a level, upload it to any file hosting website and post it in this thread. You may create as many levels as you wish. |

DarkDespair5 Posted:The code that handles collision detection is awful, so that’s probably it. Try a different computer. |

The editor works fine, but the levels don’t. It stutters and crashes around 15 seconds into the game.

Okay, I’ve made a level, but I have no idea how to save it and actually try it out. What-to-do? |

Robok Posted:Press S to save the level, and L to load a level. These keys are found in a help message inside the editor (Note the text that says “Press H for help” in the bottom left corner) as well as some other information about difficulties and the like. |

I just did a few changes to the game at the end (i couldn’t use an ice block to move to another screen, an invisible block appears and you have to jump it)
Maybe i’ll do a better one later ReKaZ edited this message on 02/05/2009 9:52PM |

The level is good and challenging, but it doesn’t look like there’s any difference between normal and hard mode. Did you figure out how to bumign difficulty levels to objects? |

i’ll give it a try later, i’ll modify the level and bumign some spikes or whatsoever to hard… |
