I like Junji Ito and Hitoshi Iwaaki’s works. I like things that are out there and bizarre that seldom fall into the cliches most do, no super deformed comedy relief antics or stuff like that.
Preferably the manga is printed in English for accessibility reasons but online is fine by me. |

It’s not specifically horror, but the Hellsing manga are breathtakingly awesome.
It’s dark, gothic, graphic, and the art is phenomenal. There are currently 9 of them, and out of the 100+ manga I own, they’re by far my favorite.

Might want to try Higurashi no Naku Koro ni as well as it’s sequal, Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Kai. While they aren’t the nicest looking anime’s in the world (that really is putting it nicely, I’m pretty sure the animation budget was low), it’s story is grade A, especially when you get to the second season, which is where the story REALLY shines, and things begin to add up. Seriously some ****ed up stuff. Sadly to the best of my knowledge the manga has only been licensed recently (under the title Higurashi When They Cry), so you’ll won’t find it in store for a while.
Also, while not really horror, give Serial Experiment Lain a try, mind **** at it’s best. |

I believe we discussed this Log in to see images!
Anyway, School Mermaid is short and kind of spooky. it doesn’t comapre to Ito’s work, but it was a medium fix for my post-Uzumaki depression.
Jiatsu Circle is also good. It’s about suicide.
Biomeat Nectar is sort of horror-sci-fi, but it’s still scary and violent.
Manhole is a horror that’s not all CRAZY like Ito stuff, but I feel it’s spooky in an intellectual way. It’s a psychological thriller as opposed to horror I guess.
Variante is good too, it’s sort of action/drama but it’s pretty weird compared to my other suggestions.
Arm of Kannon is really good. It’s similar to Ito stuff and is visually and intellectually disturbing.
Also look up stuff by Ono Fuyumi. Fuyumi’s stuff is sometimes themtatically similar to Ito’s a littl bit, but the mangas might be hard to find.
That’s all I can think of right now, but I’llg et back to you if I make any discoveries. |

I mean, the Japanese understand cartoon art the way they understand rock music. |
