time is infinite Earth was made 4.6 billion year ago life has only been around on Earth for the last 3.5 billion years
meaning that it took 1,100,000,000 years for these conditions to become perfect that sounds pretty reasonable to me
since those results were emulated in a lab under similar conditions, it probably isn’t that far fetched that this can happen |

from a purely materialistic vantage point, our brain is just a highly complex biological computer, designed to compete, survive, and pbum on his information to the next version. if this is the case, why do we experience events? why is there an “I” for each person that experiences things subjectively, when the job could be done just as well by a philosophical zombie? |

Experience is an illusion created by our mind’s processes. Primates have a less developed sense of self, but it’s there. We are simply an advanced machine. What’s so hard to believe? Complex structures have evolved through the ages; consult a biology book. Some apes can recognize themselves in a mirror. It’s simply a problem of degree. so we should all just revert to using the “Uni-Mind” (the collective brain used by those little three-eyed green aliens in Toy Story) that way, none of us think individually i mean, computers work together, don’t they? |

1. experience is an illusion? explain what you mean, because as far as i can tell this is just another moronic statement 2. i didnt mean to limit my argument to human minds, for sure ‘lesser’ species also have subjective experiences

BirdOfPrey, our consciousness is a collection of neuronal impulses and concentration gradients of different compounds in our brain. |

u said that we should not think independently those aliens all have 1 common mind… since they dont think independently
from the way i interpreted what u said, ur saying autonomy is bad so im asking if the opposite is good |

your computer is a collection of materials, made up of elementary particles and run with electrical impulses. that doesn’t make it illusory. |

It’s determined by environmental variables. It’s illusory because our actions are simply machinations of our component parts. We have simply evolved a more advanced nervous system through natural selection and genetic mutation. What’s so special? DarkDespair5 edited this message on 12/07/2008 12:00AM |

Self Consciousness post: Our body is made of billions of tiny single-celled organism which sticks together to form one large organism that is us. Every second a few hundred of them dies (I think..) Can these cells, individually, be called a living being? |

everything you are saying makes no difference to the fact that each of us has an “I” that subjectively experiences events. you can try different arguments forever as to why it is just an illusion but it’s like trying to argue that your hand is just an illusion. |

yes, every (living) cell is a living being. who can say whether or not they experience events though? Everyone always talks about a supposed critical mbum for consciousness but I see no reason to bumume one. Perhaps even single-celled organisms experience subjective phenomena |
