Instead of starting invasion in may, they began the invasion over a month later on June 22, 1941. It wasn’t only the natoriously cold Russian winters that slowed the advancing German army down, but unusually rainy conditions prior to winter. Once winter was already upon them, Hitler’s military advisors pleaded with Hitler to do a stratigic retreat so that supply lines wouldn’t be overextended durring the winter months and then precede with the invasion the next spriong. As per usual, Hitler didn’t listen, which of course was a fatal mistake, because Hitler did not believe in the idea of a retreat for any reason at all.
