Well this was in somewhat poor taste, but it has been almost 8 years – it’s got to stop being off limits for jokes eventually… yes, it was terrible, and for those who lost loved ones it’s not going to ‘get better’ any time soon, but the rest of us can’t be expected to have the same kind of emotional connection to the date.

Unrelated fun fact; immediately after Sept.11 a lot of people in the US avoided flying, choosing to drive to wherever they were going instead (within the states I bumume, since there’s a few natural barriers to driving to anywhere in Europe/Asia). The extra people on the road, statistically speaking, probably led to around 1,500 extra road deaths, almost as many people as were in the towers in the first place.

The moral of that story being that people overestimate risk when there’s a large emotive event in recent memory. Natural part of the way the human brain works, but it can make us do some screwy things in the aftermath of tragedies.
