I use semicolons a lot more, too. Colons are a rare occurrence; I abuse semicolons a little, I think.

This. I’m always expected to have various sentence structures in any formal writing bumignment I have; it helps a lot. I’ve come to favor the semicolon over other types of sentence combination.
