He’s going to charge for content, not items. Unless free players only get a small amount of content (or get locked out of important features, such as player stores,) there will be no balance issues.

Which I’m cool with.

That’s actually one of my favorite things about the brownie points. Rather than let the people get gamebreaking abilities and then run amok among the general population, you get locked out when you cheat. That actually allows two completely separate lines of items: “good” and “cheating” items, so to speak. =o
