Boobs So who is on this Rule Task Force that Mc Banhammer thinks is a waste of time?

For the record, I don’t care to see any shock besides goatse. The outcry was about borderline images that seemed like something we would have previously gotten away with. There was FAIL’s bummilk and I got banned once for a pierced male reproductive organ pic, etc. The pics didn’t seem like things that would have been considered shock before a certain point in time.

I think the community was asking for a more modern definition of shock. I didn’t notice anyone asking for it to be entirely allowable in Role Playing.

Shii, as advice maybe you should be a little less defensive.

Yes, that was the basis for it.

I mean, I could be wrong here, but I don’t really recall seeing much shock besides goatse, even in shock-enabled rp forums.

Every now and then a pain series gets in, but yeh.

EDIT: You’re probably right was, but it’s tough when for whatever reason, none of the others in this committee save a couple mods are bothering to even look at these threads.

People hate me enough as it is without hysteria and over-eager finger-pointing to make it worse.

Shii edited this message on 07/16/2009 1:48AM

People posted pain series all over for awhile, but as anyone who put thought in it could have anticipated, it hasn’t really been a big deal.

I think having a RP “lite” would solve quite a few problems, but I don’t think it will never happen.

Well, how about changing the rules in RP a little to make everybody happy? Make shock images avalable only in the trollhole, spam in Re-res, scripts in GOTO 10, etc. Almost nothing would have to change except the mods having to babysit more than they do, and we have ten already who seem to be bored enough.

Ah, yes. Let’s make the rules more confusing.

The rules seem pretty simple to me, it’s the ****ton of grey areas made by the enlightened community that seem to cause so much grief.

Have to agree with this, especially since a lot of people use Active Topics, which doesn’t tell what section.

MY MEMORY IS THAT OF A SMALL GRAPE

i would like to go to a rules of goatse and meatspin and maybe a few other harmless shockporns like that is OK to embed, but anything else will be at moderator discretion of removal and possible community ban. if someone thinks it’s too gross, communityban them for a day or two.

It’s not an issue much anymore because i dont think i’ve seen pain series or medical photos of horribly sick children in a long time. But i do not like that they could be lurking just around the corner.

It still burns me that allowing it globally was the choice deemed best. I suppose at the time it was, given CZ increased the number of moderators 250% and they all had varying opinions on what constitutes shock.

With the community bans i think stuff could be rethought. Yes, I’m extremely pro mod-choice. I pine for the days when MCB and I ruled over this place and shock was not an issue and people would be like ‘aww that was a bull**** ban” and we’d be like “**** you we’re the mods”. Actually that last bit didn’t really happen but i still wish it did. The sad truth is we’re both busy people who can’t spend all day online anymore.

I dunno i just think there’s got to be a better rule than “post whatever the **** shock you want.” especially since communitybans let you still read flamebate and play the game uninhibited.

I agree; with community bans now in place, I think the rules can be re-thought a bit.

To be honest, this might be a good occasion for compromise; some new faces get into the Rules Committee and we try to hash out some new rules with the mindset that we can now community ban for offenses.

I really do talk ****!

Sorry, Shii, I didn’t see a good reason people couldn’t know who was on the committee, but I haven’t felt the need to spew the line up of everything that was hashed out. What is the point in that? I’ve already argued everything to death, I’m sick of it.

When we were looking for a sensible stance the opinions varied wildly. Before you go raising yourself and Tubs onto a pedestal as sole defenders of the people you might mention to the people that one of the major points that kept getting argued over and over was the fact that every person had a different definition of what was “shock.” Definitions of what was shock ranged from “pierced nipples” to “anything being expelled from the body” to “anything where the subject is unwilling” to “x amount of any bodily fluid” to “graphic pornography or violence.” It was all mixed in with the defining of NSFW and at some point at least one person mentioned averting their eyes whenever anything pornographic was on screen.

No one was “rah rah, let’s allow shock”, it was more of a “how can we create a cirgreat timesstance where 7 people with different opinions treat the users fairly, so people aren’t getting banned based on which mod got the report.”

What offends or is shocking to me is personal and it is an “I know it when I see it” thing. Why would that be different for any mod or admin? Unfortunately, the mods and admins are in a position to have their personal taste make a game impact on a player who might have considerably more liberal taste. (See bummilk drama for point of reference.) As mods/admins are the people with the power to ban, rather than have MCB ban for something that Tubs would allow, or spacekadt question why Aldo banned for something she wouldn’t have, ET proposed a solution that eliminated mod opinion from the equation.

Did it impact rp? If by impact you mean that SG was disgusted by it and stopped rping, yes. Other than that there have been very few players rping anything other than “I’m a troll, see how I spam!” for a long time, so really not a major impact.

It has always been a little game for the rule pushers to try to find the borderline images to post, then they have fun creating drama when the ban comes down. With the allowing of shock the admins basically conceded that you were the very best at pushing to the limit. Congrats, you won and the admins put the game away rather than insisting that their mod team continue to jump through hoops in the game of “is this image shock?”

Perhaps this is a case of be careful what you wish for. Perhaps with the introduction of the community ban, it’s time to rethink it, push shock back into the hole that most of us would prefer it had never left. And if the rules do change, maybe there will be a lot of mods and admins laughing their bumes off the first time someone wails about their unfair ban. Nah, there’s plenty of other ways to push the rules. Getting banned for shock is really boring and lazy (yes, I know I did 2/9 times).

It would’ve been a good idea, yes, but you have to understand that from the standpoint of a group that was trying to remain behind the scenes, including someone like Hobo was a huge risk, because at any time he might just go rat everything out “for the lulz.”

There’s a line between being a good, contributing poster, and being a troll. While Hobo does both quite frequently, he crosses that line a little too easily for us to be comfortable with.

Personally, I would support Hobart being added, because I know he can be serious at times and I like him a lot. (I know JB is his nemesis though.)
