Not sure what a small boiler like that would get up to for psi, but i suggest a face protector visor at least and a few feet away, when you get it fired up. Safety first always. Not that a visor would stop a chunk of…brbum, it looks like? i sure hope you didnt just take sheet brbum and weld a seam in it to make a tube, i dont think plain welds will hold that pressure, not with the added heat. also those end welds look suspicious…i hope you just exercise caution, thats all.

Reasonable concern. I’ll bear that in mind when I try it off steam again actually.

scalding oily water on my eyes is definitely something i want to avoid.

PPE has been in place the whole time. I’ve got some nice goggles and masks.

Thinking more about it I’m kind of sketched out. I’m probably gonna make a plexi house around it so if it blows a leak it will be contained.

Okay so I got some more done tonight. And by some I mean one piece. The crankshaft/axle is ready to be used. It sticks a bit at fully extended and retracted, so I might have to clean it up a little. For now it should work, there’ll be so much weight on the flywheel a bit of stick should not cause issues.

Pictures tomorrow when my eyes aren’t full of dust. Even though I wear safety goggles the dust from the dremel kicks up under the goggles sometimes D:

Nightly progress bump:

today there actually is progress! The flywheel/crankshaft is in place on the base. The power piston is half done; it’s physically there but it needs a sturdy stand and some tweaking.

After work tomorrow I hope to get it done. If not tomorrow, I have mondays off and will for sure finish it then.

I promise to post an update picture tomorrow. It’s not shiny or clean yet since there’s a huge chance it won’t work at all. rather not waste time polishing a turd if you catch my drift.

For you ‘oh **** boiler bomb be careful’ people, comparing flywheel speed on compressed air vs steam it looks like it’s hitting 30PSI tops. Which is well within safe limits. The emergency blowout goes at 40.

So i almost finished it today.
then i realized i had the piston control valve plumbed in the wrong order so it would do one cycle then get suck blowing steam out.

So there’s the piston and flywheel made. 4/5 parts done.

I’ll go back to the hobby shop and grab some more pipes and hopefully get this thing finished by the weekend.

the theory behind my design is solid, it’s just hard as **** to solder in three pipes into one small barrel then clean out the center without ripping the three pipes off or deforming it.

also the boiler is much less cute today. i forgot to fill it properly when testing and half the solder joints on the bottom melted then the boiler turned pink again from heat. looks ugly. oh well.

That’s why they used to build them on a much larger scale.

Pretty awesome though.
