Seems like some of them could be handled by a bit flag type construct, or just a varchar string of values, if you were interested in reducing the number of tables anyhow. Databases don’t work that way. You can’t have tables with subtables. The only data format that really supports that sort of thing is XML, which is really bad in just about every other way.

Defensedefense is additive as well. -5 defense from FBO makes forums hit me for about 3-4 more damage per hit (it’s hard to tell exactly due to the random nature of their attacks). However, as I’ve gone over in a different thread, as that difference applies to the entire forum things get wacky.
Say in a given forum each thread takes you 5 hits to kill. With more offense, it takes you 4 hits to kill. That means with lower offense you take 4 hits per thread, with higher offense you take 3 hits per thread. So, your offense alone is effectively reducing the damage you take to 75% of normal.
In a forum that does low damage, defense might take things to 50% of normal. If they’re doing 8/hit and your defense subtracts 4, they’re now doing 50% normal damage. Defense is better than offense there. However, if a forum is doing 24 damage a hit, and your defense knocks off the same 4, you’re taking 83% of normal damage.
EDIT: another odd occurrence is that since offense is additive, it has a greater effect on re-re attacks than any others. (view post) |

Additionally, defense CAN be better than offense, point for point. It just has to be in certain forums. Losing 5 defense to the FBO attack in the furry forum doubled their damage. I doubt +5 offense would make me kill the forum twice as fast. The metal forum also seems to be kind of low in the damage department. Defense just gets worse as the forum damage goes up because it’s subtractive, and offense always modifies your turns to kill a thread by a ratio.
The way they work isn’t really the problem, the problem is just that clbumes seem to get shoehorned into specific builds, so any difference just makes the gameplay kind of dumb when you have to fight a forum that your equipment is really bad for, considering you have no choice whatsoever. DefenseSeems really bad. The RP Forum did about 22-24/hit when I had a troll club. Now with a baby sealskin overcoat (7 more defense), they only do about 2-4 less damage a hit. I guess it adds up to a good amount of health over the course of the forum (about 100 or so), but +7 offense seems like it would save far more than 100 health, since I’d likely be pwning forums in 2-3 hits as opposed to 3-4. And that’s not even getting into the exorbitant repair costs for the item. Considering it costs well over 100 flezz to repair it after one forum, I’d probably be better off with a heterozygous tiger and just buying more smileprin XRXR.It seems like defense being somewhat crappy has a lot to do with people’s problems with playing trolls. Edit: Though, defense does seem really good in the furry forum, specifically due to the fact that that 3-4 damage getting knocked off reduces what you take by 50% or so. Defense just seems to get worse as the forums get more damaging, since it seems to just subtract X damage instead of modifying the damage by some percentage. Thinking about it more, sometimes defense is better due to its arithmatic nature, since in the aforementioned forum, the equivalent offense boost would have to make you kill it twice as fast to save as much damage, which it likely won’t do. This in and of itself is a good dynamic to the gameplay, but the current equipment just doesn’t leverage it. All the troll equipment except for the tiger is +3 offense and +X defense. As a troll, you have no choice except to excel against some forums and suck against others. I’m sure this applies to other clbumes as well. I think the game would benefit from making equipment cheaper and with a more diverse selection. (view post) |

FrugalityWell, as I said the defense boost isn’t enough to make up for the extra hit you take. Especially when you start hitting the harder forums. Defense is only really worthwhile on your character because of how much life it saves over the course of an entire forum. It just isn’t strong enough for a temporary boost to really matter. Whippits should probably give +10 or +15 defense at a minimum if they are supposed to do anything. (view post) |

Frugalitywhippits are completely useless in my experience. You use one turn using them, so you take a hit for nothing. The +5 defense MIGHT make you break even on that hit you took over the next 3 turns. On most forums you won’t even break even though. (view post) |

I wasn’t using any whippits, either. I think the whippits might actually be your problem. +Defense seems to do very little in my experience, and that’s a lot of flezz and turns for not much benefeit. (view post) |

FrugalityMine’s at 4… I think smileprin XR used to be 70 and now it’s 55, so a 21.5% drop or so.

FrugalitySmileprin XR was 70, and it’s still 70. Or at least it was. Now it seems to be 67. It was definitely still 70 after I got the upgrade that put my frugality at 4 though.
Wish I would have known it did next to nothing before I bought a few upgrades of it… Is there any specific reason why it does that little? (view post) |
