"Mainstream Media": An easily abused termJournalism majors represent. Especially since we’re all ready outdated. I’m still in school and even worse I’m a print journalism major.
Anyway, I only skimmed this thread because I hear too much about the media every day.
There are a LOT of problems with the main stream media, especially in its dieing days. The lack of money means it’s only going to get worse. There’s going to be less and less staff which means less reporters covering more stories without time to fact check or dig deeper. It also means they’re more likely to copy-and-paste from press releases. They’ll also accept press conferences staged by the government. Even more, the competitive aspects of the industry stress urgency which also leads to a lot of misinformation.
The thing you have to remember about the media is that it doesn’t exist for you.
Television, newspapers, magazines, etc all exist to deliver advertisements to us. Sometimes the line between news and business is easy to see, sometimes it gets blurred. The LA Times has a bad track record of this.
I attended a lecture by Kevin Klose who spent 10 years as the president of NPR. He said NPR has the best news coverage because all their money goes back into supporting their news team. Everyone else has to pay investors and stockholders and find new ways to advertise.
The MSM is not bad because of bias, but because it’s not fulfilling it’s purpose of existing to inform people. It’s priorities aren’t straight. (view post) |

Fresh Prince - Macbeth Style! (is this win?)Recommencer Posted:
Subtle.
Just because it’s not an RP forum doesn’t mean I can’t have a negative opinion. Especially since we both have more or less the same problems with it. The disregard for the basic plot of the play turns me off when the point is to summarize. There’s wasted lines like: “I begged and pleaded with him, day after day \ but there just wasn’t anything that i could say.” Some parts don’t fit well, which also goes against the principle of the thing.
He asked is it win?
I said I didn’t think so. (view post) |

Fresh Prince - Macbeth Style! (is this win?)MacBeth wasn’t from Statford-on-Avon.
Other than that, it’s pretty pointless. You glossed over so much due to the restraints of the format there’s really no sense in making it at all. (view post) |

God, how could COLLEGE kids be so STUPIDMost people’s Stephen King suggestions are really good. King has gotten a little bit of a bad name, but the man has written some really good stuff. Especially Dark Tower and The Stand.
Also, Xylon mentioned Harrison Bergeron one of the best short stories ever written. I just want to say if you do read H.B. and like it DO NOT seek out the made-for-Cinemax movie. I want to kill the people who made that.
I never finished it, but the first section of Canticle for Leibowitz is pretty good post-apocalyptic fiction. (view post) |

God, how could COLLEGE kids be so STUPIDRepo Man is a kind of sci-fi-ish movie.
I second Primer. Also, 12 Monkeys isn’t bad.
I don’t like sci-fi books much, aside from Philip K. male reproductive organ. If you’re ever in a used book store and you find a volume of the Dangerous Visions anthologies, pick that up.
In one of them there’s a story about a guy who goes to a dimension (or maybe another planet) where some women are pretty much lobotomized and bred for milking. The traveler tries to **** one, but her woman's genitals is cavernous.
I think there was also one where Earth sent a rocket filled with semen in to space.
I’m not even joking.
Also, while it’s not really sci-fi stay away from bizarro fiction. It sounds appealing, but it’s always a lot of kind of kind of interesting elements that amount to nothing. (view post) |
