Playing Strategy Games Improves Leadership SkillsInertia Posted:
I wouldn’t say they improve Leadership skills, no. Organisational skills, planning skills, maybe. But not Leadership skills.
Just remember: with a strategy game, since you’re not giving orders to PEOPLE … there’s really no “leadership” involved. Leadership isn’t really about “making the decisions” ... it’s about COMMUNICATING those decisions, delegating parts of the authority needed to execute those decisions, and motivating people to work towards completing the plan you’ve devised.
...
OTOH, being the head of a large, active, well-organised and successful Clan/Guild/whatever in an MMO …? Yes, IMO, one can learn effective leadership (and personnel management) skills from that sort of activity.
In a Clan or Guild leadership role, you really ARE practising and learnign the skills to do just that – to not only formulate a plan, but then, figure out who best to take charge of which aspect of it, and, how to motivate the people in that group to work towards the goals set forth in that plan. Strategy games: Real-Time or Turn-Based ... and why?As you may or may not have gathered from the subject line, the question is:
If you play computer strategy games … which do you prefer? Real-time, or Turn-Based? Please explain your preference if you can. And I know this may be pushing things, given the forum, but try not to be TOO much of an bumhole about the one you DON’T like, ‘kay? Log in to see images!
...
As for me, I prefer Turn-based games.
Mainly to me, I guess, is that RTS are more “OMG faster faster faster”, with no real time to think or plan. 8( Yet, it’s the thinking and planning I most enjoy! That, and the nearly inevitable “survive endless waves fo enemies, with this small pittance of woefully inadequate defenders” mission, which one MUST get past in order to continue the campaign.
So, with RTS games I just end up cheating my way through, 9 times out of 10. 8( (view post) |

Failout IIILord Shplane Posted: Yes and no.
It’s very much like Oblivion, it does have guns, and everything has been SERIOUSLY ****ed-over with nuclear weapons (and there’s a room I got into that had over TWENTY unexploded atomic bombs O_O).
However, the explorable area is a lot smaller than Cyrodil. As well, levelling is different … closer to earlier Fallout games than to Oblivion; what you use has no bearing on what you improve when you level, and you don’t have to sleep to level up … it’s just “poof, you’re better now”.
There’s a level cap, btw – 20. You stop getting XP once you hit that point.
Very soon, I’ll be starting my “evil bastard” playthrough … heh …
EDIT: Oh, and I love the TACTICAL options the game gives you. Faced with a half-dozen minigun-wielding SuperMutants, and running low on ammunition? Well, if they’re advancing through a full parking lot, AIM FOR THE CARS. Each one is a micro-sized tactical nuclear weapon, waiting to go “KA-THOOOM”.
...
Missile launcher in good condition: five hundred and eighty caps.
Half a dozen missiles: three hundred and twenty caps.
Getting a parking lot filled with two busses and eight cars to detonate in chain-reaction while half of Talon Company advances between them: PRICELESS.

Failout IIIJust finished my second playthrough a couple hours ago.
First time, I followed the main path, very little side-tracking, just “did what I was told”. (Favored small guns; the combat shotgun was my personal favorite.)
Second time, I did every side-mission I could … as a very, very NICE guy. Log in to see images! (Favored energy weapons – GAWD, the plasma rifle is fun!!)
Next time, I plan on being the evil-est evil **** ever to blight the surface of the earth. Log in to see images! (view post) |
